Jessica Jones

Year: 2015 – 2019

Seasons: 3

Before Marvel Studios was stunning fans on Disney Plus with its MCU offshoots, a multitude of Marvel shows were doing that on a different streaming service: Netflix. The second of those came in the form of Jessica Jones and this was a rare case of a sophomore outing matching (or perhaps even eclipsing) its predecessor.

Taking the very best of the grounded material that Daredevil offered (and then grounding it even more), the Krysten Ritter-led series was barely even a superhero show. Instead, it adopted more of a noir-like detective approach, focusing on its layered and flawed protagonist in one of the most compelling character studies the genre has ever seen.

DC’s Stargirl

Year: 2020 – present

Seasons: 2 (season 3 is happening)

The very last DC Universe original series, Stargirl premiered at a time when there was very little new content on TV due to the production shutdowns of 2020. It didn’t rest on its laurels, though, as it produced a big-budget, heartwarming and comic-accurate adaptation of Courtney Whitmore’s journey to stardom.

Brec Bassinger delivers a career-defining performance as the Star-Spangled Girl in a show that continues to go from strength-to-strength. We’re so happy it found a new home at The CW because Stargirl‘s story is just getting started and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for the JSA.
