After a month of hiatus, Batwoman has been canceled after just three seasons on The CW.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, it was announced that The CW has canceled Batwoman after merely three seasons on the air, Caroline Dries, the showrunner of the show made a statement on Twitter. She wrote:

"“Just got the sad news that Batwoman will not be seeing [season four]. I am bummed, but full of gratitude. What an honor to make 51 episodes.”“So many inspiring, brilliant people contributed to this series. Thank you producers cast and crew. Thank you fans! We love you [heart emoji]”"

Despite the closing moments of season 3 and the series finale of Batwoman, which potentially set up a new danger for the citizens of Gotham, it may have not been enough to warrant a season renewal.

As the previous writer reported immediately after this season finished airing, the showrunner would have had in mind a major DC villain “would require getting some approvals” from Warner Bros. Television. Find out via the link which DC villain we believe it would have been. However, this journo is willing to bet Dries will reveal which Big Bad she was trying to get clearance in the coming months Batwoman is off the air.

What is going on with The CW and which shows are still in the Arrowverse?

Batwoman has fallen in the footsteps of shows that reached their natural end i.e. Arrow, Supergirl, and most recently Legends of Tomorrow, albeit some that were axed supposedly by lack of confidence such as Black Lightning. The Flash is the last remaining flagship spin-off show along with newcomer Superman & Lois that are officially part of the Arrowverse joined other shows on the network (All American, Riverdale, Walker, and Kung Fu) that received early renewals.

Stargirl and Naomi have already been established to be standalone, though we do not know the fates of both shows, especially the latter as the series developed by Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship has not received a renewal, and Stargirl’s third season subtitled Frenemies has not aired yet.

The dilemma happened in the midst of parent companies of The CW (Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global) considering a sale of the broadcasting network to the telly giant Nexstar as a potential buyer. Batwoman, despite initial strong ratings during its first season, has declined throughout its run and what did not help were the production trouble and the controversy that followed with original Batwoman star Ruby Rose who played Kate Kane.

Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder had some big shoes to fill in the sophomore season but despite the rating plunge it did manage to level out and found its footing in style and narrative. Unfortunately, this was not enough for the Scarlet Knight to escape the lethal combo of red tape and numbers.
