There’s a new Batman TV series on the way (and it’s the hope DC fans need right now)

The CW has officially ordered Gotham Knights to series, with the DC show becoming one of the lucky few in a dark day for the network.

If you’re in the mood for more Bat-Family drama from the DC TV side of things, you’ll be happy to know that Gotham Knights has been ordered to series by The CW.

The property was one of three pilots in contention for the network’s 2022 – 2023 season, along with Supernatural prequel The Winchesters and Walker prequel Walker: Independence, and it has now been revealed that all three will be moving forward.

Developed by Batwoman creative team Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux and Natalie Abrams, Gotham Knights is set in the aftermath of Bruce Wayne’s murder, placing the spotlight on his rebellious adopted son as he teams up with the children of Batman’s enemies when all of them are framed for killing The Dark Knight.

Gotham Knights is a rare bright spot on a dark day for The CW

The decision to greenlight Gotham Knights was some welcome good news on an otherwise dark day for The CW. The veteran network canceled around half of its shows, pulling the plug on long-running shows like DynastyCharmedIn The DarkRoswell: New MexicoLegacies4400 and Naomi. This also comes after the cancelations of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman.

The loss of an OG Arrowverse legend like Legends of Tomorrow as well as Batwoman and Naomi signifies the possible end of a chapter in terms of DCTV. The CW always championed its DC shows as it essentially brought superheroes back to network TV, so to cut three of them so suddenly (especially a veteran show like Legends which deserved a proper conclusion) is definitely an indicator that the network has entered into a new era – one that is no doubt influenced by its potential sale.

Is it the end for superheroes on The CW? Not for the time being, as we still have new seasons of Superman and LoisThe Flash and DC’s Stargirl to look forward to. The first of those is the network’s best performer, but the former show to hold that title, The Flash, likely doesn’t have more than two seasons left in it. And then Stargirl‘s fate remains uncertain as it’s one of just two shows yet to have its fate decided (perhaps as its third season has yet to air).

The confirmation that Gotham Knights will go to series suggests that there is still hope for DC TV on The CW. It’s not Arrowverse, but there is still hope of a spin-off set in that universe, Justice U, coming to fruition too. With that in mind, it’s clear that the network still plans on producing superhero-inspired content for the time being. And given that it is the one responsible for starting the superhero TV renaissance, that’s a good thing.

Oh, and justice for Legends of TomorrowBatwoman and Naomi!
