Harley Quinn season 3: Joker goes legit by running for Mayor of Gotham City
By Mark Lynch
A new Harley Quinn season 3 trailer has shown The Joker living a happy life with his family after he has left crime behind. Is this the end of the evil Joker?
Harley Quinn season 3 is almost here. After getting the first two seasons of the former DC Universe show within a year of each other, the third season comes over a year after Harley and Poison Ivy left Gotham City to explore their relationship. If you read Harley Quinn: The Animated Series: The Eat. Bang! Kill. Tour by Tee Franklin you saw all the shenanigans that the duo went through.
As great as the first two seasons and the comic book was, it looks like we haven’t seen anything yet. The newest trailers show a lot of fun in store for Harley, Ivy, Joker, and all of Gotham City.
There have been a few trailers to see. The one above is PG-13. There won’t be any cursing. In that trailer, fans can see The Joker is walking happily with his significant other’s kids, Nightwing saying his city needs him (while Harley is annoyed by him), and more. Then there’s the Red Band trailer. It has all of the cursing and leans into the show’s more mature content. Both have things that have to be mentioned. Here are the biggest takeaways.
Joker for Mayor
"“I’m both a maniacal force of nature and want universal health care” – Joker"
The Joker seemed to be serious when he decided to stop being a criminal. No one would think that the Clown Prince of Crime would stop being a homicidal maniac. Yet, here we are. He’s enjoying a nice normal life in a suburban area with his lady and her kids. Despite his happiness, Joker is running for Mayor of Gotham. He’s even giving bundles of money away to people. Unfortunately, people are still scared of him.
Regardless of why Joker is running, he won’t go unopposed. Gotham City Commissioner James Gordon will be throwing his name in the race. What’s funny about this is it appears that Two-Face is his campaign manager. Those two were ready to kill each other in the previous episode. It makes sense that Two-Face would be a campaign manager. He knows the law and Gotham City. Before he was a criminal, he was a district attorney named Harvey Dent. Why he’d help Gordon is another question altogether.
Trouble in paradise
One of the biggest questions this writer has is why The Joker would run for mayor. If he had to guess, it has to do with Poison Ivy’s plan. In the trailers, Ivy wants to terraform Gotham and reclaim it for all plant-life. While it sounds like a good idea, there’s a con to it. Ivy’s plan is killing people and, surprisingly, Harley doesn’t like it because people will die in the process.
Harley Quinn used to revel in killing people. She may have been against innocent people dying, but she never seemed to concern herself with the collateral damage. During season 2, Harley discovers that she’s not the villain she claims to be. She’s really a hero. Well, anti-hero would be a better term. Both Ivy and Harley will have to find a way to find a compromise. If not, their relationship will be over.
Batman: The Animated Series, is that you?
Fans may have missed that Harley Quinn and her gang were falling into a world that looks very like the Batman: The Animated Series universe. It was obvious by the red sky, the shape of the buildings in the background, and the way Batman jumped into action with his cape. Hopefully Kevin Conroy will voice Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Something else might have gone unnoticed. When Harley Quinn was falling into that universe, Doctor Psycho is with them. Whether he’s with them as adversaries or teammates will be revealed during the season. No matter the reason, it’ll be good to see him. He’s a fun character in spite of his flaws.
