Matt Reeves appears to have big plans for his Batman Universe and is said to already be developing several new projects for the franchise.

On Oct. 17, Hollywood Reporter and other trades reported that Director Matt Reeves is looking to expand his Batman Cinematic Universe. The same report also reveals that the future of DC films is bright.

The trade revealed that Reeves is currently crafting his “expansion plans” along with developing a sequel to his The Batman did gross an impressive $770.8 million box office worldwide when it was released this past March. Now it’s clear the future is clearly bright with a Colin Farrell-led HBO Max Penguin spin-off series which will consist of eight episodes.

Farell did reveal some insight about the series during an interview with Extra TV:

Matt Reeves Batman Universe plans

Most notably The Penguin series in development picks up “about a week after The Batman ends” while the city is still flooded, and the very first sequence sees the Gotham crime boss “splashing through the water in [Carmine] Falcone’s office:”

"“It starts about a week after ‘The Batman’ ends. So Gotham is still somewhat underwater. I read the first script of the first episode and it opens up with [Oswald Cobblepott] feet splashing through the water in Falcone’s office, which even just that alone when I read it I was like, ‘Ahh, geez.’ (Colin Farrell via Extra TV)"

The actor also praised writer Lauren LeFranc’s work on the project thus far, remarking that “it’s so well written:”

"“It’s lovely. It’s so well written. Lauren LeFranc has done an extraordinary job. She’s writing the whole thing and showrunning it. She’s formidable and it’s a very exciting prospect.”Farrell finished things off by noting just how much “[he loves] that character” and after feeling like he “didn’t have enough” time as Oswald Cobblepott (aka the Penguin) in The Batman, now is his chance to “do more and more and more: Because I love that character. I was greedy with it. I felt like I didn’t have enough. I wanted to do more and more and more. So now I’m getting the chance.” (Colin Farrell via Extra TV)"

However, the trade disclosed that Reeves is plotting more. The director is meeting with writers and filmmakers to build out movies — “yes, movies, not just series”.

The various projects would be centered around Batman rogue’s gallery, many icons that are already established, and others that have been lingering comic panels for a time. The list includes and ranges from the Scarecrow to Clayface to Professor Pyg. The trade confirmed that these projects are currently in the very early stages of development.

All positive signs that Warner and DC understand and feel that Matt Reeves has a solid foundation and plan for the Caped Crusader. Now we just wait, till the Bat-Signal lights up, and the city of Gotham cries out for their hero.

The Batman is currently streaming on HBO Max.
