1. Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man 2 is not only the best Tobey Maguire entry as the wall-crawler, but one of the best superhero movies ever. Peter Parker was at his lowest when stakes were at their highest. After all, Doctor Octopus was an amazing villain that proved to be the perfect antagonist for our friendly neighborhood hero. The way the movie managed to perfectly balance Peter’s day-to-day struggles with iconic action sequences and a heartfelt story was something that will be hard to surpass.
One of the film’s greatest strengths is how much it pushed Peter Parker to his limit. He got fired from his pizza-delivery job, struggled to keep up with rent payments, lost his ex-girlfriend to another man, and was at constant risk of failing his classes. Worse of all is how he sacrificed all of this in order to save lives as Spider-Man and the Daily Bugle still kept proclaiming he was a menace.
At one point in the film, it just wasn’t worth it. Peter started losing his powers and with them, the duty to be a hero. For a brief moment, he realized how much better things were in his life if he didn’t have to carry the burden of being Spider-Man. But that didn’t last forever. After all, Peter realized that with great power, must come great responsibility.
The film gave its main character a fantastic arc that will be hard to top. Mix that with an amazing villain, iconic set pieces like the train sequence, and a superb soundtrack, and what you get is an exhilarating movie that managed both to be deep and extremely fun. Many live-action Spider-Man movies have been released ever since, and none of them got even close to surpassing Spider-Man 2. Who knows, maybe we’ll never get a better big-screen adaptation of the wall-crawler aside from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
