DC shows have been cancelled left, right, and center over the last year but one might unexpectedly survive.
We may be about to get a new DC Universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, but there has been little to celebrate in the run-up to that. DC Comics fans have had to sit and watch their favorite TV shows and movies get cancelled right before their eyes as Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios attempt to form a single universe across film and TV.
However, there have been exceptions to that rule. While the evolution of both Warner Bros. Discovery and The CW over the past year have resulted in the loss of Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, DC’s Stargirl, and Naomi, shows like Superman and Lois and The Flash were renewed for new seasons (though The Flash‘s ninth season is its last). Meanwhile, Netflix saved Dead Boy Detectives, and Amazon stepped in to rescue cancelled animated series Batman: Caped Crusader.
But it looks like the most unlikely DC show of all could survive impending cancellation, and that is none other than Gotham Knights.
The CW could renew Gotham Knights because it’s cheaper to make

As Nexstar’s era of The CW continues, there have been more cancellations this year, with the network moving away from a slate full of original programming. Three shows remain on the bubble, with decisions yet to be made on the fates of Superman and Lois, Gotham Knights, and All American: Homecoming.
While Superman and Lois seems like the most likely choice for renewal considering its popularity and the acclaim it has received (it’s currently the network’s most-watched program), the network may lean towards renewing Gotham Knights instead as it’s cheaper to produce.
Nexstar are aiming to make The CW profitable and are hoping to do that with cheaper programming. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gotham Knights is “the least expensive DC series The CW has ever aired”, so it’s easy to see why the show suddenly has a chance of being renewed for a second season in spite of its lukewarm reception and solid-but-lower viewing figures. A second report from THR also confirms that they are eager to “keep at least one DC show on the network”.
As for Superman and Lois, THR adds that a move to HBO Max would be possible given that it’s “pricier”. The show has proven to be popular on the streamer, so it would make sense, especially as James Gunn and Peter Safran were happy for it to continue for at least “one or two” more seasons before the DC Universe comes into full effect with Superman: Legacy.
They had no comment about the fate of Gotham Knights. But it sounds like The CW is open to more of that show, which certainly came as a surprise to many DC fans.
