Jurnee Smollett was fantastic as Black Canary, but we have no idea which heroes will be recast in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe

Black Canary is a character that deserves to be seen on the big screen again. She’s a unique hero that blends her grounded roots as a martial artist with her fantastical element of the Canary Cry, making her an intriguing and complex character. What makes Black Canary even more fascinating is that there are different versions of the hero, which means we could see different actresses take on the role. The comic book version of Black Canary is a legacy character, with the original being Dinah Drake and her daughter Dinah Laurel Lance taking on the mantle later.

We’ve seen the TV show Arrow take a similar approach, with Katie Cassidy playing Laurel Lance (also known as the Black Canary) and Juliana Harkavy playing Dinah Drake (also known as the new Black Canary). However, if James Gunn and Peter Safran were to decide to recast the role for a new DC film, it would be interesting to see who they choose to play the iconic hero.

Jurnee Smollett played Black Canary in 2020’s Birds of Prey, and many fans believe that she was the perfect choice for the role. Smollett brought a new depth and complexity to the character, showcasing her as a fierce fighter and powerful superhero with a rich backstory. It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the character with the same level of depth and nuance that Smollett brought to the role. Given the DC turnover, there’s a chance Gunn and Safran move in a different direction.
