Gotham City met new young heroes in the most recent DC CW show but what does the future hold for them? Is Gotham Knights season 2 happening?
There was a lot of talk about Gotham Knights long before it debuted. Its first trailer was released in May last year to an incredibly divisive response, but the show itself fared a lot better, with audiences enjoying it. The ratings reflected that, as it held steady throughout the vast majority of its run, making it one of the more consistent performers on The CW.
The series follows Turner Hayes, the adopted son of Batman/Bruce Wayne who is framed for his murder, along with Cullen and Harper Row and Duela (a.k.a. “the Joker’s daughter”). They band together, along with their allies Carrie Kelley (a.k.a. Robin), and Stephanie Brown, in a bid to clear their names, only to discover that the entity responsible for Batman’s death is the infamous DC group of villains known as the Court of Owls.
It’s been an adventurous first season for Gotham Knights and it has all come to an end with a memorable season finale in “City of Owls”. But what does the future hold for the DC show? Will Gotham Knights season 2 happen?
Is Gotham Knights season 2 happening?
Unfortunately, Gotham Knights won’t return to The CW for a second season. After a lengthy wait, the network opted not to renew it for another season, which unfortunately saw it join fellow new shows The Winchesters and Walker Independence (as well as veteran shows Kung Fu, Nancy Drew and DC’s Stargirl) in getting prematurely cancelled.
There were reports that The CW was actually eager to keep the show on its line-up as it was the cheapest DC show to air on the network, and with new owners Nexstar keen to produce cheaper programming, Gotham Knights could have had the edge over the critically-acclaimed but expensive Superman and Lois.
In the end, after discussions with Warner Bros., the network agreed to renew Superman and Lois for a fourth season and All American: Homecoming for a third season, while cancelling Gotham Knights. Though attempts were made to shop the series to find it a new home, they were unsuccessful.
Gotham Knights really came into its own in the end and it’s a real shame that it didn’t get a second season. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable ride and we’re super grateful to the cast, crew and creative team for entertaining us these past few months.
