The Boys season 4 trailer is here! Just a few days after sharing the first look at the new season and confirming the 2024 release window, Amazon dropped the first full trailer for the new season. It's incredible! The hype for this season is so high coming on the heels of a great first season of Gen V, and the stakes are higher than ever for The Boys in season 4.

Thanks to some tweets from showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke and Amazon, we have a much clearer picture of when the new season is coming out. Unfortunately, there’s no premiere date for The Boys season 4 to report just yet, but Kripke confirmed where The Boys season 4 is with post-production.

As of Nov. 13, 2023, the writers and actors are back at work after the WGA and SAG strikes ended in September and November, respectively. Now that those strikes are over, the actors and writers can begin to work with the rest of the post-production team on any edits, ADR, and more.

Is there a release date for The Boys season 4?

There's no release date for The Boys season 4 yet, but we do know a few important things. First of all, The Boys season 4 is coming in 2024. And in November, Kripke confirmed The Boys season 4 is almost done. In the tweet, Kripke confirmed editing is “done,” which is a very encouraging sign. It means we’re close to seeing The Boys season 4, maybe even closer than originally expected.

The Boys was renewed for season 4 in June 2022, about a year before the writers and actors went on strike. Those strikes, along with Gen V’s September premiere date, are one of the main reasons we haven’t seen The Boys season 4 by now. The Boys films in Toronto, and filming on season 4 ended in April before the strike started.

So, when is The Boys season 4 coming out? Amazon has not revealed the release date yet, but they did share two teasers that confirmed season 4 will arrive in 2024.

Early 2024 is still on the table for The Boys season 4 release date, but it really comes down to when Amazon wants to release the new season. The new trailer says "Coming Soon" at the end, so that seems promising. But, does soon mean like now? Or does it mean sometime later in 2024? It's ambiguous for a reason.

For now, we’re updating our release prediction to spring 2024. We’re assuming that there are at least several months of promotion that will have to take place before the season will be available. Spring 2024 seems like a safer bet at this point.

So, that’s where things stand. Realistically, I think we might be waiting until summer until The Boys season 4 hits Amazon.

Release Prection: Spring 2024 (at the earliest)

Trailer

Amazon shared the new trailer for The Boys season 4 on Dec. 4, 2023, and it's fantastic! Check out the trailer below:

In the nearly two minutes long look at The Boys season 4, it's an ominous look at Homelander's plan. Basically, it's to create as much chaos in the country and capitalize on that chaos by being the one that saves the day. We see clips of Homelander and his enthusiasts attack Starlight and her supporters.

There's also a voiceover from Susan Heyward's character, Sage, to Homelander looping him into this plan of sorts, and it's pretty scary, honestly!

"Rome. Greece. All democracies fail, because people are f****** stupid," she says. "But if you crush the masses, who builds the monuments? Who tongues your taint? No, the people will tear it apart themselves. You just gotta nudge them a little. Then, you get to swoop in. Be the one saving it."

Homelander responds, "Like Caesar?" and she repeats him, "Like Caesar."

At that moment, Homelander grasps someone's hand, and it looks like Sage's hand while on stage, likely at a rally of some kind. I don't know, but how ominous? It's getting heavy in The Boys season 4. We're getting an "election" in The Boys during an election year in the United States of America. Wow.

In the trailer, we also see Butcher meeting Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character for the first time, along with a whole bunch of other disturbing things. It's going to be an epic season; that's for sure!

We’re still waiting to see if Dominique McElligott will be back in season 4. Her character's arc wrapped up in the third season. We’re still betting we see them in the fourth season, somehow.

There are a bunch of new cast members in The Boys season 4, including Susan Heyward and Valorie Curry, who are playing Sister Sage and Firecracker, respectively. New supes!

Jeffrey Dean Morgan of Supernatural and The Walking Dead has also joined the cast of season 4, along with Rosemarie Dewitt, Rob Benedict, and Elliot Knight.

Additionally, Cameron Crovetti who plays Homelander’s son, Ryan, is also going to be a series regular this season. Watch for him to have a much bigger role.

Kripke tweeted that Derek Wilson, who stars as Tek Knight in Gen V, could possibly be joining the cast of The Boys season 4, but he also mentioned he’s not going to spill any details about that right now. We’ll just have to wait and see, but Tek Knight is from The Boys comics and could loom large in the new season of The Boys.

There’s also a possibility that we could see the Gen V stars Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, Asa Germann, Derek Luh, and London Thor in The Boys season 4. In fact, I’d even say it’s likely we’ll see the Gen V stars in The Boys season 4!

What’s next in season 4 (and how Gen V sets it up)?

At the end of The Boys season 3, things are in a very precarious position for the Boys. Homelander is more emboldened than ever, despite Starlight’s revelation about who Homelander really is and how he behaves.

In the season 3 finale, there’s an epic battle between a Temp V’d up Butcher, Homelander, Soldier Boy, Maeve, and the rest of the Boys at Vought Tower. Butcher and Soldier Boy use Maeve’s help to try to kill Homelander, and it nearly works until Soldier Boys loses his mind and plans to blow up everyone at Vought Tower. Maeve knocks Soldier Boy out the window before Soldier Boys explodes.

Later, we learn both are alive, although Maeve doesn’t have powers and Soldier Boys is, once again, under lock and key. I’m sure that will last long.

With Starlight as a new member of the Boys heading into season 4, the crew definitely has their hands full. Butcher, who used Temp V all season, learns he has limited time because of using the substance to gain power, and he might need more of it given what they’re up against in season 4.

Homelander, who has essentially kidnapped Ryan, his son, and is training him in the ways of the dark side, murders a protester to cheers from his supporters. And, Victoria Neuman, an ally of Homelander, is now in the position to be Vice President, which opens up a whole bunch of drama for the Boys and the country in the new season.

Kripke teased a lot about season 4 in an interview with Deadline. It seems we have not seen the end of Maeve, Soldier Boy, Black Noir, and other key characters.

"“We definitely won’t reach the end of the series without seeing Maeve again. I’m hoping we see Soldier Boy again. You know, for instance for Maeve, we really felt like for Annie/Starlight to truly grow, we needed to take away her protector. It started to become sort of narratively difficult because every time she was really in a tight spot, you know, Maeve could show up and kick some ass, and we sort of need Annie to be in a position where she might be in real danger if she can’t figure it out for herself.”"

He also revealed where season 4 is headed, and it’s venturing more into the highest office of the political realm in season 4:

"“One of the end game storylines in the books that we always really responded to was this notion that the vice president was literally gunning for the president and that the president was in mortal danger. That if the vice president were to take over, they would by all intents and purposes be a Vought plant, which was sort of that lore between Dakota Bob and Neuman in the comics. We’ve been moving our chess pieces in place to play a version of that story because that does feel like the highest possible stakes, especially with Homelander becoming more and more untethered from reality.”"

So, it looks like season 4 is shaping up to be the Boys vs. Homelander and the Seven and Vought and the Vice President. We can’t wait to see all of the fireworks that are going to happen, but everything might not be as it seems.

Erin Moriarty teased The Boys season 4 while promoting a new movie. Moriarty told Collider that:

"“The characters that you thought would be villains, you start to learn a little bit more about them that perhaps makes you feel, not that they’re good guys, but that there are always gonna be details that you can never anticipate, that prevent you from putting that character in a box.”"

After watching the Gen V season 1 finale, it’s very clear how Gen V sets up The Boys season 4. Spoilers for Gen V below!

Homelander appears in the season 1 finale and frames the four heroes of Godolkin, Marie, Emma, Jordan, and Andre, for actually committing the massacre, although they were the only ones keeping everyone at Godolkin safe. We also see Butcher appear at Godolkin’s The Woods during the mid-credits scene of the Gen V season 1 finale, “Guardians of Godolkin.”

As Kripke told Entertainment Weekly, there is a “handoff” of the story from Gen V to The Boys season 4.

"“I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that, by the end of season 1 of Gen V, there’s a handoff to season 4 of The Boys. Then whenever we break season 4 of The Boys, there will be a handoff to the hopeful season 2 of Gen V.”"

There’s also the business of the election with Victoria Neuman, the rise of Homelander supporters in America, and the new virus, created by Dr. Cardosa and Dean Shetty at Godolkin, that’s in Victoria Neuman’s possession, but Grace Mallory, who has ties to Butcher and the Boys, knows about this virus.

It’s definitely going to be an interesting season of the series, that’s for sure.

Episode count and titles

So far, there have been 24 episodes of The Boys in three seasons. Each season consists of eight episodes. While we would love to see a longer season for The Boys in the future, it’s probably not going to happen.

The Boys season 4 will also consist of eight episodes, just like the first three seasons.

We only know one of The Boys season 4 episode titles for season 4. Showrunner Eric Kripke shared the title for the season premiere to announce production had started on the new season. The first episode of season 4 is called “Department of Dirty Tricks.” The episode was written by David Reed and directed by Phil Sgriccia.

The Boys season 4 will not be the final season of the hit series. Kripke confirmed there are plans for more seasons of The Boys in early 2023, according to Collider.

It’s hard to imagine The Boys ending anytime soon! I think we could see some cast departures over the next few years, but this is a great show. It’s a huge hit. There’s more story. That’s the recipe for a long-running show.

On top of that, Amazon has shown interest in creating more shows set in this world. It doesn’t get much better for fans of The Boys, honestly.

So far, there are two spinoffs of The Boys. We’ve already seen The Boys: Diabolical, an animated spinoff, that was released in 2022. We haven’t heard if it’s coming back for season 2 yet.

And, then, there’s Gen V, the live-action spinoff of The Boys. It tells the story of a group of supes at Godolkin University School of Crimefighting. It’s going to be massive. Gen V premiered on Amazon in September 2023. The season finale aired in November 2023. Gen V season 2 is also in the works.

That’s all we know about The Boys season 4 right now! Stay tuned for more news about the series.
