3. Lily Tomlin

If Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse proved something, it’s that every version of Spider-Man reaches out to Aunt May whenever they are feeling lost. After Peter B. Parker, Gwen Stacy, and Miles Morales needed to find a place to repair a USB, they decide to go to May Parker’s house. Much to their surprise, other versions of the wall-crawler also asked her for help after realizing they were in a completely different dimension. It’s at that point that audiences are introduced not only to many Spider-People but also to Lily Tomlin’s Aunt May.

Lily Tomlin gave her voice for the most badass version of May we’ve seen so far. She didn’t shy away from a fight that occurred in her own home between Tombstone, Doc Ock, Scorpion, and multiple versions of the wall-crawler. She even hit Tombstone with a bat when the supervillain refused to take the fight outside her home. As if it wasn’t enough, May Parker was a bit of a genius herself. She created the web shooters Miles used for the rest of the film and also allowed him to take a Spider-Man suit to wear.

If it wasn’t for May, Miles wouldn’t have a suit or web shooters, and all the Spider-People wouldn’t have been able to meet by reuniting in the same place. Granted, the Spider-Verse franchise is all about Miles Morales’ story rather than Peter Parker’s. As a result, many of the characters that would have a predominant role in a Peter-centric film had secondary roles this time around. That includes Mary Jane and, unfortunately, Aunt May.

Lily Tomlin didn’t have many lines throughout Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. She wasn’t even present in its sequel: Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse. There was one scene where it’s explained her version of May moved, but that was about it. Her little participation puts her at a disadvantage when compared to the likes of Marisa Tomei or Rosemary Harris, who both had more than one movie to play the character. Still, that doesn’t take away from the fact that her version of Aunt May wasn’t scared to pick up a fight and had an important role to play in Miles Morales’ first movie (even if it was briefly).
