2. Would bring back: Henry

Losing Sam was a tragic moment on its own, and yet it was quickly followed by Henry’s suicide. It seems like Naughty Dog tried to do everything possible to make players cry (and, man, they really succeeded). Henry’s death was quick and abrupt, which made it all the more shocking. In a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, Henry killed his infected brother and shot himself after realizing what he had done. Just when it seemed they were going to accompany Joel and Ellie through the wasteland for a long time, they were permanently removed from the scene.

Throughout the events of The Last of Us, the player is rarely left alone with no help at all. In the beginning, Tess helps Joel and Ellie up until the Capitol. After her death, Bill aids them throughout the school section of the game. And when Bill parts ways with our protagonists, it’s Henry and Sam who fulfill this role. At this point, it becomes evident their presence will be just temporary, and yet we couldn’t help but grow fond of them.

Henry had one sole purpose since the moment we met him, and it was to take care of his little brother. Henry went as far as abandoning Joel instead of helping him through a dangerous situation since that would’ve meant putting Sam at risk as well. And while Joel was furious at first, he understood he would’ve done the same if the roles were reversed.

That’s why Henry felt purposeless once Sam died, and he preferred to commit suicide instead of living a life knowing he had to kill his little brother. The more we think about the whole situation, the more we would love to be able to save them.
