One of the most highly anticipated Marvel movies of 2024 just got delayed.

It’s been reported that Deadpool 3 will no longer be released on May 3, 2024, according to Deadline. Instead, the film has been pushed back, which is definitely disappointing for fans of the characters and film series and a disheartening signal for the rest of the summer 2024 theatrical cycle.

Deadpool 3 starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman was officially halfway through production when it shut down due to the actors’ strike in July 2023, according to director Shawn Levy’s interview with TheWrap. The AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) failed to offer the actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, a new deal that met the unions’ requests. Since then, the WGA (Writers Guild of America), which had been on strike since May, and the AMPTP agreed to a new deal, but actors remain without a new deal. Until that happens, production on Deadpool 3 and most other shows and movies can’t happen.

It’s not surprising that things played out this way, but it is incredibly disappointing. Deadpool 3 is one of the MCU movies fans are most excited to see. It’s already been five years since Deadpool 2. Now, that wait for the next movie is going to be longer, but just how much longer?

Potential release dates for Deadpool 3

Marvel has not announced the official date that Deadpool 3 is moving to. Effectively, the movie is off the schedule for now, but that’s unlikely to last. Assuming the AMPTP brings the actors back to work with a new deal soon, Deadpool 3 could be ready for a 2024 release date. We shared four potential release dates for Deadpool 3 below.

1. July 26, 2024

Marvel has a block for a July 26 release next year for Captain America: Brave New World, but Deadline reported that production has ended on the film, so it’s less likely to get pushed back. According to Deadline, the thinking is that Deadpool 3 and Captain America: Brave New World could swap release dates. Nothing has been confirmed, but this scenario seems pretty likely. The kicker is that the actors are still on strike, and there’s a chance Deadpool 3 might not be finished by July.

2. Dec. 20, 2024

In the case that the strike continues and the movie is unable to be completed by July, Deadpool 3 could be bumped to Dec. 20, 2024, which is currently slated for Thunderbolts. Deadline also mentioned that Marvel could add a November date to the schedule, which has worked well for other MCU movies. The Marvels is slated for a November release this year (Nov. 10).

I think we all know that Deadpool 3 and Thunderbolts won’t be released one month apart, so if Deadpool 3 is released in theaters in November that means Thunderbolts probably isn’t coming in December 2024, and vice versa.

3. Feb. 14, 2025

If Marvel can’t get things rolling until much later than anticipated, or it wants to keep Captain America and Thunderbolts in the July and December slots, it’s possible we could see Deadpool 3 in February 2025. In that case, Deadpool 3 would move to Feb. 14, 2025, which is currently held for Blade, and Blade has also been delayed twice because of production issues and the writers’ and actors’ strikes. It has not been filmed.

Unfortunately, the best-case scenario for Deadpool 3 looks like late 2024, but we’ll just have to wait and see what Marvel has planned.
