9. Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell (USS Enterprise)

Appeared in: Star Trek: The Original Series

Gary Mitchell sure knew how to make an entrance – and an exit. This character zipped onto the screen as Captain Kirk’s friend and second-in-command in the classic Star Trek series for a very brief appearance. Gary has an easygoing vibe about him that would make you think he’d be great at campfire storytelling. But his stint as first officer was shorter than a spacewalk without a spacesuit.

Just when we were all getting comfortable with Gary’s style, the gods of Star Trek threw us a curveball. A freak encounter with a mysterious force turns his eyes into disco balls and, suddenly, he’s got mind-bending powers and a major attitude change.

This quick switch from a charming officer to a super-powered being meant we barely got to see Gary doing his day-to-day first officer duties. It felt like we were flipping through a comic book too fast – we got the excitement but weren’t given all the details.

Gary’s time on the bridge was so brief, and with him not hanging around long enough, he doesn’t make it to the top of our Star Trek first officer list. But let’s be honest, not everyone gets to play the role of a galactic god, even if just for a short while, and that was pretty cool.
