The centerpiece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe calendar is almost upon us. That's a wild thing to say in a year that has already gifted us with the juggernaut that is Spider-Man: Brand New Day - which has ended up making an incredible $2.4 billion at the box office already - but the truth remains that it's looking like the reunion of Earth's Mightiest Heroes might be even bigger. Yes, Avengers: Doomsday is right around the corner - and on the verge of making history.

While it's true that the MCU has experienced some woes throughout the Multiverse Saga, Avengers movies are known tentpoles that will always draw the audiences out. And considering the fact that the past two Avengers films grossed a combined $4.85 billion, it's easy to see why expectations are still incredibly high for this one.

All that being said, we already know how Avengers: Doomsday is going to end, as the MCU is expected to take a page out of one of its predecessors playbooks - and, honestly, we should have seen it coming.

Anthony Mackie previously confirmed a cliffhanger ending for Avengers: Doomsday

Doom is inevitable for the Avengers, it seems. At least that's what fans have taken Marvel star Anthony Mackie's previous comments about the ending of Avengers: Doomsday to entail. Speaking in a 2025 Collider interview, the Captain America star revealed that "everyone is expendable", adding that "the cliffhanger at the end" builds towards an exciting continuation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As his full comments say:

“You know what? I was really excited, man... It’s one of those stories that really pushes the boundaries, and it —the cliffhanger at the end, you know, the last moments of the film— it really builds and sets us up for a way for the continuation of the Marvel saga, which is really exciting.”

So, there you have it: Avengers: Doomsday will end on a cliffhanger, apparently after the film suggests that everyone is expendable. And that can only mean one thing: Doctor Doom is winning this war and the multiverse will inevitably collapse - if not be completely reshaped into something entirely different.

If you have been keeping up with the MCU, this honestly shouldn't come as a surprise. Just like 2018's Avengers: Infinity War was the first part of a two-act conclusion to the Infinity Saga, 2026's Avengers: Doomsday is the first part of a two-act conclusion to the Multiverse Saga. Therefore, it's fitting that it will take a page out of the Infinity War playbook and end on a cliffhanger.

The 2018 movie saw the Avengers fail to defeat Thanos before he used the Infinity Stones to eradicate half of the universe's population, wiping out some of the most beloved MCU heroes in the process. It was a true shocker that left Marvel fans in awe for a whole year, enhancing the anticipation around standalone movies Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp and ultimately building towards 2019's Avengers: Endgame. With 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, you can see why Marvel Studios will be eager to recreate that successful formula here, setting the stage for Avengers: Doomsday's ending to act as a launching pad for its own sequel.

Mackie is part of an ensemble cast of Marvel stars from the franchise's past, present, and future, as Earth's Mightiest Heroes join forces with The Fantastic Four and the X-Men in a bid to stop the rise of Victor von Doom (played by Robert Downey Jr.). The Sam Wilson / Captain America veteran is joined by the likes of Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Lewis Pullman, Hannah John-Kamen, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Evans. X-Men veterans Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, and Alan Cumming all return too, joining forces with Deadpool and Wolverine's Channing Tatum.

Doctor Doom certainly has his work cut out for him but, for this movie at least, it sounds like it's the Avengers who will have the most insurmountable task of all: Defeating Doom and his multiversal incursions. Thankfully, they will get another chance to do just that in 2027's sequel Avengers: Secret Wars.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
