It's been over seven years since Earth's Mightiest Heroes last assembled on the big screen to defeat Thanos and restore half the life in the universe. But even when the worst seems to be behind them, the Avengers will need to return to face their biggest challenge yet.

In just a few months, Avengers: Doomsday will be released, and it will mark the beginning of the end of the ongoing Multiverse Saga. All eyes are set on the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, so it's easy to forget there's an even more ambitious project on the horizon courtesy of Avengers: Secret Wars. Both of these crossovers are meant to tell one single story, as was the case with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame before them.

Fans speculate that Avengers: Doomsday will end on a shocking cliffhanger that won't be resolved until one year later, much like what happened at the end of the Infinity Saga. Now, a new report has doubled down on this idea by revealing the events that will unfold in the film's final act. But before we begin, consider this an official warning: There could be MAJOR spoilers for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars ahead. If you don't want any surprises spoiled, it's best to turn away now.

New report unveils the hopeless ending of Avengers: Doomsday and how it sets the scene for Avengers: Secret Wars

According to industry insider James Mack, the heroes will once again fail to stop the villain from accomplishing his goal. However, Doctor Doom isn't looking to eradicate half the life in the universe, like Thanos, but rather to reign supreme over reality as a whole.

As revealed by the report, Earth's Mightiest Heroes won't be able to find a solution to the multiple incursions happening across the multiverse. Eventually, every universe in existence will collide with one another, destroying everything and everyone who ever existed in the process. In the aftermath, there will be an endless emptiness housing one lone survivor: Doctor Doom.

The ruler of Latveria will then create a new world in his image, where he can reign as a "god." This would mirror the events of the Secret Wars (2015) comic book storyline, where Doom creates Battleworld from the pieces of many Marvel universes and becomes the God Emperor of this new world. Just like in the comics, most characters will forget their lives prior to the creation of Battleworld in the live-action adaptation. Instead, they will believe this newfound reality has always existed.

Most MCU heroes will live a new life "completely manipulated by Doom," and this will then set the scene for the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. Interestingly, a different report from another source supports the idea that most people will lose the memories of their previous lives prior to the creation of Battleworld. The rumor claims that only a few select characters will have "free will" in Avengers: Secret Wars, while the rest will be under Doom's control.

The resistance will consist of three different groups of heroes: the veterans (including Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool, Tom Holland's Peter Parker, and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine), the young blood (who will be the Young Avengers / Champions along with Sadie Sink's Jean Grey), and new heroes who have yet to make their cinematic debut. While it remains unknown who will be part of the latter group, some rumors suggest Ryan Gosling's Ghost Rider could be among them.

It will be up to these few characters to save the day and the rest of the Marvel heroes from Doom's influence. Furthermore, it has been reported that Jean Grey will play a big part in breaking the spell cast by the ruler of Latveria and making the rest of the world remember their former lives.

Of course, it's always important to take any rumor with a grain of salt, but different reports seem to agree on some key plot beats of both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which adds even more weight to their credibility. On the bright side, the time for answers is nearly upon us, and we can't wait to see how it all pans out.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
