Just when things look like they’re finally getting back on track for Marvel Studios, a rumor comes along that suggests the train might have gone off the track once again.

There is no denying that after Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe began to lose direction. After spending years meticulously building towards major events from the Avengers assembling for the first time to Thanos finally emerging from the shadows to face off against Earth’s mightiest heroes, the franchise got a bit directionless after Endgame. That’s not to say there haven’t been amazing projects since Endgame, as there most certainly have—in fact, we’ve seen some of Marvel’s best work in the last several years both in film and on TV. However, these projects haven’t felt as interconnected as Marvel projects once did.

For a long time now, it’s felt like many of the latest Marvel projects have been disconnected from the larger narrative, with many projects sadly never going anywhere. Part of this has come from the unexpected pivot Marvel had to make when the Kang Dynasty fell, and Marvel has been working to correct course ever since. This ultimately led us to the introduction of one of Marvel’s most iconic villains in Doctor Doom and a pair of highly anticipated Avengers films: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Recent releases have been actually working to build towards something again, with films like Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four helping to set the stage for Doomsday, which will directly pave the way for Secret Wars. The interconnected nature of the two films is part of why Marvel’s plan has been to release them a year apart.

Originally, the plan was for Doomsday to open on May 1, 2026, and Secret Wars to open on May 7, 2027, but the films were later pushed back several months, with Doomsday moving to December 18, 2026, and Secret Wars shifting to December 17, 2027. While the release months have changed, the plan has always been to release the two films a year apart from one another; however, that plan is now in jeopardy.

Avengers: Secret Wars filming delayed again which could impact its release date

Cameras were supposed to begin rolling on Avengers: Secret Wars in August 2026, but the film has hit a series of setbacks that have resulted in delayed starts to production. Production has reportedly still not started on Secret Wars, and trusted insider Daniel Richtman is now reporting that production will not begin until November. This will make the turnaround time for what is going to be one of Marvel’s biggest and most ambitious films yet incredibly tight.

If filming does not begin until November, that means that Secret Wars will have roughly 13 months to complete the movie between filming and post-production. To put it into perspective, that’s five months shorter than the production timeline for Doomsday, which began filming roughly 18 months before the film’s December 18 release date—and fans will recall that there have been many last-minute reshoots for extra photography in the months after filming initially wrapped.

For a movie that is expected to be one of the most massive Marvel Studios movies ever and one of the longest Marvel movies, 13 months is an insanely tight turnaround to film, edit, and release a movie the size and scale of Secret Wars. This will not give Marvel Studios much room at all for error and would give the film’s editors and VFX teams less than a year to prepare the film after filming stops. That’s an incredibly big ask of Marvel Studios, and it sounds like even the November start date for filming is up in the air.

Although Marvel has not commented on its filming timeline or given any indication that Secret Wars might not be ready in time to make its December 17, 2027, release date, the reality is that the film’s release date could be very much up in the air and it wouldn’t be out of the question for Marvel to have to delay Secret Wars’ release date.

While not impossible per se, it seems highly unlikely Marvel can turn around the film in just 13 months or less, and we sadly are getting a sense that the film could be in real danger of getting pushed back to 2028. This is likely the worst-case scenario for Marvel Studios, and we imagine that Marvel will do everything it can to make the film’s current release date. However, fans might want to begin bracing themselves for the very real possibility that Secret Wars could be delayed as a result of the string of reported filming delays the movie has endured.
