It isn't long until the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe reunite for the inevitably game-changing Avengers: Doomsday. It's the movie that fans have been waiting for, the one that will kick off the culmination of the Multiverse Saga (and now randomly clash with Dune: Messiah) and officially bring in Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom. Yep, it's a star-studded, must-see affair for Marvel fans.

Star-studded is indeed the term for it, as Marvel Studios unveiled the cast for the film some weeks ago on a five-hour livestream, confirming that the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan and more will be back for the big event movie. However, there were also some noticeable absences from that cast list too.

There was one baffling absence, in particular, and now rumor has it that this person will actually appear in the movie after all. And this is good news as fans were worried that the character's role in the MCU had been cancelled.

Captain Marvel now expected to appear in Avengers: Doomsday

As revealed by Atlanta Filming, Avengers: Doomsday will be filming in Windsor Great Park in the United Kingdom on June 15, 18, 26, and 27. Most excitingly of all, part of the set being built for production is a spaceship, which is expected to be the same one used by Captain Marvel in The Marvels. If this is the case, it likely confirms that Brie Larson will appear in the 2026 film.

Although Larson was one of the cast members expected to be a part of Avengers: Doomsday, her name was mysteriously left off the cast announcement, leading fans to believe that she might be involved after all. But this is apparently not the case, for the spaceship's involvement would likely point to Carol Danvers' return.

Casting announcement side, Larson's involvement shouldn't be all that surprising given Captain Marvel's role in the MCU. Ever since the character's introduction in her 2019 self-titled movie, she has become one of its most prominent figures simply due to the fact that she's a veteran superhero with experience of the cosmos (Captain Marvel is set in 1995, so Carol Danvers has been around for a long time).

She's also played a prominent role in what's left of the Avengers after Avengers: Endgame. Although the team is no longer together from an official standpoint, she has been a source of knowledge and guidance to the heroes on Earth, as we saw with her return in Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, in which she was able to provide advice about the origin of the Ten Rings (with the help of Wong and Bruce Banner).

There were reports that she would act as one of the primary Avengers after the team is reformed, but the casting announcement threw that into uncertainty. Larson's most recent MCU appearance came in The Marvels, which bombed at the box office, so there were rumors that the character might have been given reduced role going forward. Among those rumors was a report that a planned Captain Marvel 3 had been cancelled.

Thankfully, Captain Marvel's role has not been cancelled in the MCU as it seems that she will be back on screens sooner rather than later. And, if for any reason the character doesn't appear in Avengers: Doomsday, it's highly likely that she will feature in the 2027 sequel Avengers: Secret Wars, which promises to be even more larger than life.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
