Daredevil: Born Again cut the return of a character from cancelled Marvel series

Marvel nearly brought back a key character from a cancelled Disney MCU show for a major episode of Daredevil: Born Again.

In March, Daredevil returned to the Marvel universe with the launch of Daredevil: Born Again, a continuation of sorts to Netflix’s canceled series. The new series brought back several of the show’s original cast including Charlie Cox as the title character and Vincent D'Onofrio as the villainous Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk.

Season 1 of the show quickly became one of the most well-received Marvel series on Disney+ and has redefined Marvel Studios’ approach to Marvel projects. A second season has already been filmed and slated for a March 2026 release, with a third season in the works as well, making Daredevil: Born Again the first live-action Disney+ Marvel series to run for longer than two seasons.

While Daredevil’s return has been met with praise from both fans and critics, his journey back to the small screen was not a smooth one. After filming several episodes of the show, Marvel decided to throw out its original plans and completely retool the show to be more in line with the Netflix series and serve more as a continuation than a blank slate.

The creative reset paved the way for the show to return to its roots and also saw the show bringing back key characters originally not attached to the project, including Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page and Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson. The decision, however, also seems to have led to the scrapping of appearances from other Marvel characters including the title character of another Marvel Disney+ original series.

Daredevil: Born Again originally included an appearance from Echo, but Marvel cut the cameo

Before Daredevil: Born Again underwent its creative reset, the show was planning on bringing back Alaqua Cox to reprise her role as Echo. The exact size of her role is unclear, but it seems the plan was for her to play a pivotal role in a bottle episode which would have brought together Echo and Jon Bernthal's Punisher.

"They were looking to do a kind of singular bottle episode around the Punisher crossing into the Daredevil space," Daredevil: Born Again writer Jesse Wigutow told IGN in a new interview. "It involved the Punisher and Echo kind of spending an interesting night together — not romantically, but narratively.”

While The Punisher’s involvement in Daredevil: Born Again was still incorporated into the retooled season, Echo was left on the cutting room floor with the character failing to be featured in any capacity within the show’s first season. Instead, the show simply referenced her character and her complicated past with Fisk.

Given the fact that Daredevil and Fisk both appeared in Echo, it would have been natural for Echo to crossover into Daredevil: Born Again and fans were disappointed when it didn’t happen in the first season of Born Again. That disappointment is likely to deepen now knowing that there were plans in place for the character to be involved in the original iteration of the show.

The door remains open for Echo to appear in Daredevil: Born Again

While Echo’s appearance in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again was cut after Marvel hit the reset on the series, the door remains wide open for Echo to make an appearance in the future on the show. In fact, knowing that her original appearance was connected to The Punisher, we have to wonder whether she could end up being involved in the character’s offshoot which will be coming in 2026.

Daredevil: Born Again writer Jesse Wigutow hinted that there is a chance the storyline concept could be revisited, so perhaps we might get the opportunity to see Echo and Punisher coming together in Marvel’s Punisher special or even in the second or third season of Daredevil: Born Again.

With Fisk having taken control of New York City in the season 1 finale and waging a war against vigilantes (and really anyone in disagreement of his views/in his way), it’s expected that Daredevil will have to assemble a team to bring Fisk down. Could one of the names on his list end up being Echo?

We’ll have to wait to see when Daredevil: Born Again returns in March 2026!
