Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again had the opportunity to be one of the greatest comic book seasons ever. It started with a spark, and the explosive season continued throughout. But the deciding factor would be the season finale. Could the show live up to the greatness it’s had since the beginning? Simply put: Hell. Yes.
WARNING! SPOILERS FOR THE SEASON 2 FINALE OF DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN!
First, I need to take a moment and highlight how brilliantly the show started. There was no cold opening. It was the opener (which we likely all skipped), and then things get right to it with Karen Page on trial for vigilante activities. And while some people may not like that there was a lot of courtroom stuff towards the end of the season, no one can doubt how intense it was. More importantly, it fit the show and the lore of Matt Murdock.
Speaking of Matt, he comes into the courtroom with the confidence of a god. He knew he was in the right and that the law was on his side. However, viewers know that means nothing in a show like this. But many didn’t realize that Murdock was willing to give it all up to save Karen. That’s including revealing that he was Daredevil.
The reveal was perfectly timed and well done. First, it took Wilson Fisk’s power away. He couldn’t blackmail him anymore, and this meant he could testify that he was there when the port blew up (episode 3). Luckily, the risk was worth it. Because, after everything was said and done, Wilson Fisk had to take a deal to resign as mayor, renounce his American Citizenship, and leave the country. Sadly, the cost came with Matt Murdock now being a criminal.
Many people may look at this ending as disappointing because Kingpin and the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen didn’t have their big showdown. It’s a normal thing to happen in superhero shows and movies. With that being said, Fisk doesn’t need another beating. It’s been done before, and he always recovers. Instead, he was forced to leave the city he genuinely loves.
On the flip side of that, while Fisk is standing on a tropical beach, Matt Murdock is in prison. After everything Wilson’s done for the city, he’s imprisoned for assault, attempted murder, and so much more. He may be able to beat the attempted murder charge, but there’s no way he gets away with the others. Unfortunately, the answers to that will have to wait until season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again or maybe Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Finally, there was one more reveal that may have made everyone happy. Luke Cage is back home with Jessica Jones and his daughter, and he’s completed his last job. Apparently, Mr. Charles traded in Power Man for Bullseye. And, if we’re being honest, working for a shadowy government agency is the job Poindexter was born for.
