The two-episode release of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 episodes 2 and 3 was a great idea. Episode 2, titled "Shoot the Moon", features a lot of the Anti-Vigilante Task Force (or AVTF) abusing their powers by kidnapping people, while others were intimidated, beaten, and killed. At the end of the episode, Karen Page reveals to Daredevil that she’s kidnapped one of the members of the AVTF.
Episode 3, “The Scales and The Sword”, begins with the kidnapped AVTF officer saying that he wants to help the vigilantes because Powell and the rest are psychos. To prove his loyalty, he gives Karen and Daredevil a keycard that will get them into the secure areas in the Red Hook Port.
After getting some information from Kirsten McDuffie, Daredevil goes to the Red Hook Port to destroy Mayor Wilson Fisk’s military-grade weapons. That plan is nixed after he realizes that the kidnapped people were illegally being held there. Rather than stay with the plan, the Man Without Fear saves the people and escapes. And, as great and talented as Matt Murdock and Jack Duquesne are, they would have died during the breakout if Angela del Toro hadn’t helped them.
As Matt and Karen are driving away, they hear an explosion. While they did save the people whom the AVTF detained without due process, each of the contractors on the ship was killed on Fisk’s order. All Daredevil could do was listen in horror as the Russian contractors either drowned or burned to death.
Explanation Without Fear
Marvel Comics fans know that Wilson Fisk is a monster, and the Kingpin would concur. He believes that the only way to obtain and keep power is by strength and force. If that means he has to break some eggs to make one of his fancy omelets, so be it. It’s why he didn’t hesitate to let his people know to blow up the ship.
Now, Fisk is likely going to spin this and say that the vigilantes killed innocent contractors. He will also state that the people who escaped were in on it as well. People will believe this because, for all of Fisk's many faults, he's incredibly charismatic. This will make Karen and Matt’s work more difficult. However, as bad as that is for the vigilantes of New York, this could be the thing that sends Matt off the deep end.
Fisk killing innocent people in an explosion is similar to what Bullseye did in Dark Reign: The List. If I’m right, get ready to see Matt Murdock join the Hand and fall down a hole of evil similar to Shadowland. That could bleed into Spider-Man: Brand New Day and explain why Spidey is fighting the Hand. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to see if that happens.
