Daredevil: Born Again is racing to its finish line with just one more episode left in the season now that the penultimate episode has dropped. Episode 8 packs quite the punch as we head into the final episode of what has been an amazing first season.
The episode begins with a quick glimpse into Dex’s life in prison, where he’s been transferred to gen pop. His return at the top of the episode is quick, but it’s clear he’ll be playing a big role in the episode, and that is indeed the case – more on that in a bit.
Following episode 7’s shocking conclusion, there is a lot of fallout to get through. Heather is struggling with Muse’s attack and having taken his life during the ordeal in her office. In talking through her feelings with Matt, she makes a comment about how Muse and Daredevil are one and the same, pointing out that she saved herself rather than accepting Daredevil’s role in helping her. The conversation is interrupted as worlds collide with Fisk’s right hand man showing up to personally deliver an invite from Fisk to his Black and White Ball. Matt can’t even entertain the idea of showing up to Fisk’s ball, warning Heather that Fisk only wants to use her trauma to push his own personal agenda.
Speaking of Fisk, we learn a few developments: his port project is now fully funded and Vanessa was in on the plan to kill Luca. We then see Fisk take Vanessa to where he’s been holding Adam. Rather than freeing him, Vanessa grabs a gun and shoots Adam several times, killing him as Fisk promises her he’ll never leave her again.
When Matt arrives at his office, he gets word that Dex has been transferred to gen pop at Mayor Fisk’s request and that Dex has requested a meeting. As Matt is having a drink with Josie, Cherry walks in and informs Matt about Fisk’s plan to make a name for himself by hunting vigilantes. Matt is bothered by the fact that he’s clearly missing something and that there has to be a connection between Dex and Fisk. When Josie returns with a bottle Foggy has ordered the night of his death, Matt realizes that Foggy was celebrating that night and that he must have found something that would win his case, which ultimately led to his death.
Matt goes to visit Dex in jail and questions him about who hired him to kill Foggy to which Dex points out that he’ll happily tell him if Fisk hired him, but only if he’s released from prison.

Daredevil: Born Again season 1 episode 8 ending explained
Fisk’s Black and White Ball arrives and Heather is not exactly happy with Matt, who is a no-show. Just as she finishes leaving Matt a heated voicemail, in walk Vanessa and Fisk, the latter of whom is wearing his character’s iconic white suit.
Just when it looked like Matt was going to bail on her, he shows up and makes his way through the crowd to Heather. As Matt apologizes, he can’t help but overhear conversations between Fisk and Swordsman talking about some underhanded dealings. As this conversation unfolds, BB sparks a conversation with Commissioner Gallo, who hints that he’d be more than happy to help provide her with intel on Fisk’s anti-vigilante task force as other cops listen in, hinting that the tide could be turning on the commissioner.
As the ball is unfolding, we see Dex get the upper hand on the prison doctor and guard, allowing him to sneak out of prison in a guard’s uniform. Word eventually gets back to Fisk, who doesn’t seem happy about the news, but it’s Vanessa who is more uneasy which is when Matt realizes it was Vanessa who hired Dex to kill Foggy, not Fisk. During a dance, Matt cuts in on Fisk and Vanessa as he makes it clear he knows Vanessa was behind things.
We see Dex up in the balcony with a sniper rifle looking down as Matt tells Vanessa he doesn’t know why she had Foggy killed, to which she changes the subject by asking if Heather knows he’s Daredevil. Just as Fisk asks Heather if she knows why her boyfriend has a thing for vigilantes, the conversation is cut short when Dex fires his weapong with Fisk in his line of target. Just as it looks as though Fisk is about to be shot, Matt jumps in front of him and takes the bullet. Everyone flees as Fisk grabs Vanessa and runs off, while Heather holds onto the injured Matt as the episode comes to a close.
Given that we already know the show has been renewed for season 2 AND this show is called Daredevil: Born Again, it seems more than obvious that Matt is going to survive his brush with death. As shocking as it was to see Matt jumping in front of Fisk to take the bullet, it’s a cliffhanger that is sort of underwhelming since we know there is no way Matt isn’t going to survive being shot. What will be interesting is to see what could be waiting for us in the final episode of the season and just how Marvel will choose to bring the first season to a close.
