When Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy needed to restore confidence lost from the demanding Star Wars fandom, she turned in the only direction possible — Dave Filoni. The current EVP and Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm is a Star Wars savant and is directing us through these uncharted waters in a universe without a Skywalker at the helm.

Since the godfather of the Empire, George Lucas, asked him to develop Lucasfilm Animation, Dave Filoni has been an intrinsic "force" (pun very much intended) in the ongoing legacy of Star Wars. So, when someone sticks a camera in his face at the Star Wars: Skeleton Wars premiere, we all listen to hear what he has to say.

And he didn't disappoint with his news about Ahsoka Tano's saga in the universe.

No Disturbance in the Force Here

Ahsoka created anticipation and anxiety for Star Wars fans, something that hasn't happened for quite some time. We met fascinating real-life forms of characters like Tano (Rosario Dawson), Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), Baylan Skoll (RIP Ray Stevenson), Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto, who's a daughter of martial arts royalty with an homage for a middle name) and the incomparable Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen).

Season 1 was a cattleprod to the malaise that covered much of the fandom following Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett. Even Andor wasn't received as well as it should have been. Oh yes, Thrawn, "we're winning!"

Back to the Skeleton Crew premiere, Extra found Filoni and asked the questions many of us sought answers for progress. His confident answers, without revealing too much, were enough to keep us on course for what promises to be a wonderful adventure. The main thing, though, is that he confirmed it's definitely still happening.

"I'm so well into that as well. I've been writing it, and I'm still the single writer on it, and so I've been enjoying doing that, but it's a challenge, of course, and working some of these arcs through has been a challenge and making sure it's all going to come out in a way that I think is exciting for fans."

"I know that they're interested in where some of the things I developed in Season 1," Filoni continued. "I'm pretty happy with it. Love working with Rosario [Dawson], so I can’t wait to get back to that."

But Ahsoka isn't the only Star Wars project he's working on, as he was able to provide an update on The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will arrive in theaters in 2026.

"I'm very excited about it as well. Jon [Favreau] and I had a great time working on that, as we always do. It was great seeing Grogu," Filoni said. "He's become such a star, and it's amazing how it's evolved, what we can do now with the puppetry compared to Season 1 and where we are today in a film working with the team, which I worked quite a bit with them on the puppetry."

Where Does Dave Filoni Go from Here?

Dave Filoni has confirmed he is the sole writer for Ahsoka Season 2. He is also the overseer of what will be a box-office smash in 2026 with The Mandalorian and Grogu. He is also in pre-production for a wildly-rumored project related to the New Republic Era following the fall of the Empire.

We are at the dawn of an "Heir to the Empire" and about to encounter the "Project Necromancer." For those not current on their Latin, it's probably tied to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and resurrecting Gramps Palpatine. Regardless of how you feel about that, Filoni understands the need to connect the intergalactic dots to complete a compelling and fulfilling story.

The next time we will get atomic bombs dropped about the future of the Empire will be April 18 in Japan at Makuhari Messe. Star Wars Celebration never lets us down, but 2025 should be something special since Dave Filoni will be commandeering the show.
