The world has been waiting years for The Batman - Part II and they are going to have to wait a little longer than expected now too. The upcoming Matt Reeves movie is a sequel to its 2022 predecessor, which was credited for reinvigorating the box office after an understandable post-pandemic slump, while also successfully launching the Caped Crusader's newest cinematic adventures.
Robert Pattinson returns as the brooding Dark Knight with an all-star cast - featuring both returning stars and new ones - joining him in Gotham City this time around. Anticipation is high for the film, but the wait seemingly gets longer, as a new update regarding its release date has confirmed that the film is about to set a DC movie record.
The Batman 2 sets all-time record for longest gap between Batman movie and sequel
The Batman - Part II has been officially delayed again, with the long-awaited sequel now settling on a February 18, 2028 release date (moving from its initially planned October 1 release date). Matt Reeves himself made the announcement, unveiling the first test footage of Pattinson wearing the iconic Batsuit in an appropriately ominous, theatrical video.
While the announcement itself left Bat-fans all around the world feeling deflated, it's obviously the right choice for the movie in the long run as it will help ensure we get a well-polished project that is - hopefully - worth the wait. It's also pretty history-making, as this six-year gap between the film and its predecessor marks the longest amount of time that has ever come between a Batman movie and its sequel.
To put that in perspective, here is the list of gaps between Batman movie sequels to give you an idea of how long the gap between The Batman and The Batman 2 really is:

- The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - 4 years

Needless to say, this is not a record that fans expected The Batman and its sequel to break. As there are generally just 3-4 years between Batman sequels, it wasn't too unreasonable to expect the sophomore cinematic installment in Matt Reeves' "Epic Crime Saga" to do the same. In fact, it was initially expected to do just that, with an initial release date set for October 2025 (which would have placed it 3 and a half years after the first installment).
The success of The Batman made a sequel inevitable. However, it quickly ran into some issues on the business side of things as DC and Warner Bros. were caught up in the Warner Bros. / Discovery merger, meaning that the franchise could have been cancelled like so many other DC properties to make way for the newly-formed DC Studios and its shared DC Universe. But the success of that 2022 movie spoke enough volumes to keep the sequel on track and even build out the Reeves-verse.
Although the wait for The Batman 2 has been long, fans weren't entirely without content from this corner of the DC multiverse. Spinoff series The Penguin - which saw Colin Farrell reprise his role as the nefarious "Oz Cobb" - aired on HBO and HBO Max in 2024, earning critical acclaim and picking up a lot of major awards for that year of television. That bridged the gap nicely and primed fans for The Batman - Part II, but it's safe to say that fans weren't expecting to have to wait another four years after that for the sequel.
Another reason for the initial delays was the struggles in getting production off the ground. Earlier this year, there were a number of reported production windows and the film seemed to fly by each one of them. It finally kicked off in the UK this summer, with the confirmation of that leading to the announcement of the February 2028 delay. Perhaps had production started sooner, those extra five months wouldn't have been needed, but on these larger-than-life movie sets, any hold up can have massive ramifications on the schedule.
DC fans are certainly holding out hope that The Batman - Part II will make all kinds of box office history to make up this pretty historic achievement in and of itself. But even with the Matt Reeves sequel now holding that unfortunate Batman record, hopes are still incredibly high for when the film does make its presence felt on the silver screen.
The Batman - Part II arrives in movie theaters on February 18, 2028.
