Disney had high hopes for The Mandalorian and Grogu, but sadly not even Baby Yoda could help the latest Star Wars film become a box office success.
The film made history with the lowest box office opening for a Star Wars film with just $80 million at the domestic box office, a total that came in under Solo: A Star Wars Story’s $84 million opening weekend. Not only did the film underperform in its opening weekend, but it's also on track to become the lowest-grossing Star Wars film in the franchise’s near five-decade history.
It was a devastating blow for the franchise and one that has left many to wonder about the franchise’s future. After all, if two of the most popular characters in the franchise couldn’t get moviegoers to show up, the question becomes what can get fans back into theaters for a Stars Wars movie. It also creates a serious question about The Mandalorian’s future.
There are no plans for a fourth season or a follow-up film in place at the moment, leaving many fans to worry if The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the final chapter for the duo.
While the future of The Mandalorian remains up in the air after The Mandalorian and Grogu underwhelmed at the box office, it seems Disney+ is not quite finished with the two iconic characters. In fact, they’ll be heading back to Disney+ with a brand new release this fall!

LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is coming to Disney+ in September
Although it’s unclear what Disney+ has planned for the live-action franchise, the streaming service has already lined up a new title starring Mando and Grogu! The pair will headline LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, a new animated special coming to Disney+ on September 2, 2026.
This new special promises to reunite fans with our favorite Star Wars duo for an adventure Disney+ promises will be filled with unexpected laughs and action-packed fun. Plot details for the special have not yet been announced by Disney+ or Lucasfilm, but we do know that this new special will celebrate all three seasons of The Mandalorian, including appearances from fan-favorite characters from the show’s run.
Given the first poster for the special throws it back to the very first season of The Mandalorian, in which Din Djarin and Grogu first meet, it seems like this special will revisit iconic moments from the live-action show rather than feature a new storyline. It’ll be interesting to see how the special comes together and what moments from the show are featured in LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian special, and we’re also eager to see if any original members of The Mandalorian will return to voice the animated versions of their characters.
Of course, we would love to see a new adventure, but we’ll certainly settle for a reimagining of beloved stories from the live-action series. It’s also nice to see Mando and Grogu returning in a new project so soon after The Mandalorian and Grogu’s theatrical release.
Hopefully, there will be more ahead for Mando and Grogu, as we’re not ready for their adventures to be over. There is definitely hope for more, and the key will be fans showing up for the new animated special when it arrives in September and supporting The Mandalorian and Grogu when it finally releases on Disney+. Should the film perform well on the streaming platform, there is a chance that Disney+ might reconsider a fourth season or perhaps even a Disney+ special as a way to continue the franchise in a more cost-effective way.
