Is Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool in Avengers: Doomsday? It's complicated

Will the Merc With A Mouth appear in Avengers: Doomsday? Has he been announced as part of the Marvel movie's cast? It's not that simple.

The Marvel fandom is still reeling after that first Avengers: Doomsday trailer made its presence felt online. So many of them knew what to expect while others hadn't a clue; but the consensus from all of them was still shock. From Robert Downey Jr.'s debut as Doctor Doom to the sheer sight of seeing the X-Men and the Avengers square off, it's clear that the upcoming film is going to be a Marvel Cinematic Universe showcase for the ages.

That being said, there were some notable absences in the trailer too. Some cast members who had been confirmed for the MCU movie didn't appear, while rumored fan-favorites who have not yet been officially confirmed did not surface in the trailer either. And among the most notable was, of course Ryan Reynolds' Merc With A Mouth: Deadpool. The question is: Is he actually in the movie?

Deadpool is not officially in Avengers: Doomsday (but there is a reason that he might be)

While there have always been question marks surrounding the involvement of any major MCU characters in Avengers: Doomsday, it's totally appropriate that there are even more surrounding Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds' name did not appear in Marvel Studios' five-hour livestream, in which they announced the full main cast of the upcoming MCU movie, but that hasn't stopped speculation about whether he will be involved or not.

See, Reynolds was "confirmed" to be a part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast in a report that was doing the rounds in the summer of 2025, which very quickly sent fans all over the world into a meltdown. And why wouldn't it?! Deadpool in an Avengers movie is sure to be a memorable sight. The only problem is that it was then refuted by Deadline, who revealed that the Merc With A Mouth wasn't expected to appear in that film or its 2027 sequel Avengers: Secret Wars.

So, we have major yeses and nos, which makes figuring out the truth an impossibility until the movie's release. And, quite honestly, there are some really convincing arguments as to why he should be in it.

MCU fans are fully prepared for a multitude of surprises. This is a multiversal movie that will deal with heroes and villains from across the multiverse itself, and that includes the X-Men. It even includes Channing Tatum as Gambit, meaning that the Deadpool and Wolverine star will reprise his role as that version of the character. So, with that in mind, why wouldn't Wade Wilson be nearby his new friend?

Moreover, Deadpool and Wolverine is one of the few Multiverse Saga movies that actually explored the multiverse. That likely makes it one of the most important to watch - or rewatch - before Avengers: Doomsday. With that in mind, it would be particularly odd if both Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine weren't involved.

There have been reports from insiders that Marvel will find a way to involve the character. As Hugh Jackman's Wolverine won't be accompanying the X-Men in their MCU debut as part of Avengers: Doomsday, there's good reason to believe that he would be paired with Deadpool should either one of them appear. Rumors have claimed that the pair would be involved in the film's culmination ahead of a bigger role in 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars.

We'll have to wait and see if the Merc With A Mouth shows up in Avengers: Doomsday. As always with Marvel Studios, you prepare for the unexpected despite what the reports say. Anything is possible in this franchise and the only thing for sure about Deadpool is that nothing is for sure. So, honestly, it could go either way.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
