If you’re a fan of superhero movies or comic books, you’re likely pumped for Superman. You’re probably also excited about what’s next after the first movie is done. So far, the Co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, has been tight-lipped about his plans for his DCU.
We know that Lanterns, Supergirl, and Clayface are on the way, and all three have their stars of the projects have been cast. Meanwhile, characters like Wonder Woman and Batman remain a mystery. It looks like the future for the Man of Steel after Superman is too.
You’d assume that James Gunn would let his Superman (played by David Corenswet) know what’s coming. It would help him get ready for his future role. However, that’s not the case. James Gunn hasn’t even told his star what his next project is. Thankfully, there’s good news within that. Gunn is working on something, as he confirmed that the Man of Steel will return. Corenswet just doesn't know what it is yet.
Speaking to Omelete in Brazil, the Superman director said:
"He was asking me what I was working on.... He knows that I'm working on something. He knows he's a part of it. He doesn't know what it is.. .literally nothing."
So what could this be? The natural response might be a sequel to Superman, but Gunn has previously spoken about whether Superman 2 is happening and his response was, well, interesting to say the least. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly last month, he said:
"What I'm working on is in some way… I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up 'Superman' sequel? I would not say necessarily."
That isn't a lot to go on, but there are promising takes from this. First, we should be happy that Gunn understands how the game works. Anything he says can and will be used against him in the court of social media. For example, it was a major thing when the decision was made that Supes would be wearing his classic red trunks. Imagine how people would react if he said his next project is Superman 2, and it ended up being called Superman Two. Yes, a small difference, but some people would still freak out. This is social media we're talking about here!

Second, it's clear that something is being worked on; it may not be something typical, and that’s a good thing. Gunn’s projects are typically different from what people expect. If he’s doing this for Superman, then he’s cooking up something good. He knows that people want certain classic things from their favorites, but not the ordinary.
Lastly, there are DCU projects on the way where Clark Kent or Superman can make a surprise appearance before his next solo film. They are Peacemaker season 2 (which debuts in August 2025) and Milly Alcock's Supergirl (scheduled to be released in 2026). Both can give hints as to what’s for Superman and what James Gunn has planned.
The good news is that there will be more Superman adventures on the way in the near-future... even if we - like Corenswet - aren't entirely sure what they will be or where they will take place.
For now, stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow. When more things are revealed, we’ll be here to report it.
