Jason Momoa reveals his conditions for a Lobo movie

Jason Momoa wants to make a Lobo movie but only if it has one very special condition!

It sounds like Jason Momoa is ready to make Lobo a movie star, under one special condition!

It’s rare that a major actor gets to play two notable comic book characters. Jason Momoa got his first shot in the DCEU as Aquaman. His 2018 film was a massive hit that silenced the jokes about the character being lame and not powerful. Sadly, the 2023 sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ended up being the final nail in the coffin of the DCEU.

Now, Momoa is getting another shot in Supergirl. Not only that, he’s playing what he’s long described as his dream role: Lobo. The alien bounty hunter has been a highlight of the trailers, and fans are excited to see Momoa in the part. If he has his way, this is only the start of Lobo’s work inside the DC Universe!

Speaking to ComicBook, Momoa discussed how he’s long wanted to play Lobo and jumped at the chance to grab the role. He also confirmed he’s talked to James Gunn and others at DC on how this could be opening the door for more Lobo projects.

“I have asked. And they do have some plans. If I’m allowed to release anything, I would just probably say that much. Aquaman, you know, came out with a little splash of him in Batman v. Superman, Justice League was pretty big, and then Aquaman. So I think it’ll be a slow release. We’ll see where he fits, and then it would be amazing to do our own solo [movie]. But the audience really has to, like, love him and want to be there.”

Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen in 1983, Lobo caught fire with readers in the 1990s. He was intended to be a parody of the “grim and gritty” heroes of the era, only to become massively popular. The last survivor of his Czarnian race (because he killed all the rest), Lobo is a foul-mouthed, hard-drinking, cigar-smoking bounty hunter who loves a good fight and is nearly indestructible. As in, he can regenerate his entire body from one drop of blood.

Momoa is actually the second person to play Lobo in live action, as Emmett J. Scanlan played the role in the Syfy Krypton series. However, Momoa has a key qualifier for a Lobo movie!

What a Lobo movie needs according to Momoa

In that interview (and several others), Momoa made it clear that the only way he’d agree to a Lobo movie is if it’s R-rated.

“It has to be, but you’ve also got to build the fan base for that. You can’t just drop that in there and expect everybody to come in. You got to watch it. You got to warm them up.”

Once, the idea of an R-rated superhero movie would have been impossible. That was before Deadpool proved it could work, with its massive box-office success. Lobo is tailor-made for an R-rated film with the character’s excessive violence and foul mouth. Even using alien curses can make for a crazy storyline and the R-rating will ensure the right amount of gore and over-the-top bloody fights fans love.

With the DC Universe expanding in various ways, a Lobo movie or even an HBO show is quite possible. Momoa has waited years to play the role, and it looks like Supergirl will be a great introduction to audiences to his performance. If it works out, then perhaps the Main Man can end up becoming DC’s next big movie star.

Supergirl premieres in theaters Friday, June 26.
