Kathleen Kennedy believes Jon Favreau and George Lucas have something in common as filmmakers: Their innovative use of technology. Kennedy, who recently stepped down as Lucasfilm president and passed the baton to Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan, was in the UK for a Q&A while promoting The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Kennedy told GamesRadar+ how excited she is that fans will get to witness the show's transition to the big screen, and not just any big screen, but IMAX. The promotion has emphasized experiencing the movie on an IMAX screen, and director Jon Favreau explained the use of massive sets instead of the Stagecraft technology employed by the series. The use of sets to enhance scale has worked, and Kennedy says, "It's entirely on a different level" compared to the series.
Kennedy explains, "I think that we knew as we were creating the series that there was a real opportunity to expand this in a way that we couldn't even imagine, and we pulled together some of the most incredible people inside of ILM, Industrial Light & Magic, who have done all the Star Wars movies. They have done extraordinary work."
Kennedy also seemed pleased by Jon Favreau's work on the movie. She confessed, "I think what I've been so amazed at in working with Jon is that he is incredibly innovative in terms of taking technology and cinema and moving into the next level, much like what George Lucas did."
Explaining herself further, Kennedy urged fans to go see the movie on IMAX. She said, "And I think that's what you'll see with this movie: it deserves, and needed, to be on the big screen, and it is, and it's extraordinary."
Fans are already getting a taste of what The Mandalorian and Grogu will look like on IMAX, as many have seen 30 minutes of the movie. The reactions to the footage have been overwhelmingly positive.
Favreau has filmmaking experience, but he's only directed one episode of The Mandalorian. It is fitting that the writer and creator of Din Djarin and Grogu as characters is getting to direct their big-screen debut. While he confirmed that he wrote Season 4 and still has the scripts, he remains tight-lipped on what the future holds for the show and its famous duo.
Recently, Favreau revealed that he would discuss Mando and Grogu's future with his friend and Lucasfilm co-president, Dave Filoni, when the duo meets up in the U.S. Filoni is currently busy putting the final touches on Ahsoka season 2, which premieres later this year.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will release on May 22.
