Long-awaited Marvel project officially delayed; no release date in sight

With so many projects on Marvel's plate, it isn't strange for some to get delayed. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened with an anticipated adventure.

Marvel has no shortage of exciting projects on the horizon across different media. Earth's Mightiest Heroes will assemble once more on the big screen in next year's Avengers: Doomsday, but before that, audiences have a date with Tom Holland's Peter Parker when Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases. On the comic book front, all the pieces are set in place for the end of the Ultimate universe, and the King in Black himself, Knull, is set to have a series of his own. To keep the streak going, there are plenty of surprises in the video game world as well.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion and Deadpool VR are the last two titles set to hit shelves in 2025. After that, exciting projects such as Marvel's Wolverine and Marvel's Blade await on the horizon. But even if 2026 promises to be a fantastic year for superhero video games, one of its most anticipated releases has just been officially delayed. The worst part? We don't even know how much longer we'll have to wait to play it for ourselves.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra gets delayed; no new release window announced

Back in 2021, Marvel revealed its next big video game: Marvel 1943 Rise of Hydra. While the title has been surrounded in a lot of secrecy from the get-go, the few glimpses we've had of it have made us all excited, and with good reason. There will be four playable characters in the form of Captain America, Gabriel Jones, Black Panther, and Nanali, and feature jaw-dropping animations and graphics that already feel next-gen.

Unfortunately, eagerness turned to worry when no new details about Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra were announced after a long period of time. Fans started to wonder if a delay was on the cards, and now our fears have been confirmed. The game was originally set for an early 2026 release window, but it has been pushed back for an unspecified amount of time.

This isn't the first time Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra has been met with an unexpected shift in plans. Captain America and Black Panther's upcoming adventure was originally set to hit shelves in 2025 before being pushed back to early 2026. Now, there isn't a new release window set in stone. While it isn't uncommon for big, ambitious video games to be delayed (just take a look at GTA 6), what has made fans uneasy is the lack of information or any gameplay reveal about the title, despite four years having passed since its announcement.

Our very best look at Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra's gameplay came in the form of a leaked video, which showcased Black Panther fighting multiple soldiers simultaneously. One of the biggest takeaways from this "first look" at the game is how destructible the environments really are, as we see multiple props being completely broken and even chairs flying around the scene. Perhaps it is due to this level of interaction with the players' surroundings—along with the ambitious animations and graphics—that a delay was necessary.

It's been over a year since the last official trailer for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra was released. Unfortunately, the game could very well skip the Game Awards given that it has been pushed back, even though the event seemed like the perfect opportunity for a massive promotional push. There are many questions left up in the air about Skydance New Media's upcoming title, and some have begun to wonder if it will ever see the light of day.

Fortunately, Marvel insider That REDACTED Guy has claimed that Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is not getting cancelled. After all, the game has been in development for many years now for Marvel to simply scrap it. In time, the delay will likely prove to be the right move as it will allow the developers to create a memorable experience worthy of rivaling the Marvel's Spider-Man franchise. However, the lack of a new release window only raises more questions about a game that was already surrounded in secrecy. With a bit of luck, it won't be long before Marvel finally pulls the curtain on this anticipated title and we find out more about it.
