Major Marvel series gets unexpected season 2 update (and we didn't see it coming)

In a day and age when second seasons of Marvel shows are rare, the option remains on the table for one high-profile show centred on a beloved hero.

Any project involving a Marvel Comics character is going to generate a lot of buzz. While there was a large portion of time that this was explicitly exclusive to movies, the burst of superhero television over the past decade - and, more specifically, the past six years - has allowed many Marvel characters to shine on the small screen, too.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is mostly responsible for this but, as we've seen with the movies too, Marvel Studios isn't the only one producing projects led by Marvel characters. Yes, Sony has plans for its crop of Spider-Man characters, and we're about to meet one of the biggest of them all in the upcoming Spider-Noir. If all goes to plan, however, we could be seeing a lot more of that show.

Spider-Noir producers confirm series could return for a second season

The hype is ramping up for Spider-Noir and if the show performs well it might stick around for a lot longer, too. The series, which is set to star Nicolas Cage as an alternate version of Spider-Man in a very Film Noir setting, arrives on MGM+ and Prime Video this May and excitement has reached an all-time high after the first trailer promised a thrilling, mysterious adventure.

Yes, a live-action series centred on any version of Spider-Man is a big deal, and the positive signs for Spider-Noir's future are already clear. That's a good thing, because the show could return for another season, according to executive producers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord. The duo, who also bring Sony's beloved Spider-Verse movies to life, recently spoke to Collider about the upcoming project. When asked about the potential of a second season and whether the show could continue beyond its first outing, Lord responded: "It certainly could."

The pair then cracked a joke about Spider-Man projects never go on beyond one story - which we all know they do. And that could very well have confirmed Spider-Noir's fate before the first season even premieres. After all, Spider-Man is one of the most popular superheroes of all time, so it wouldn't be too surprising to see this particular series stage a return after its first season concludes.

It's a big year for Spidey, too. Not only is Spider-Noir coming out, but the most recognizable webslinger of them all - Tom Holland's Peter Parker - returns in the upcoming MCU film Spider-Man: Brand New Day this July. Meanwhile, the second season of Disney Plus' animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will also premiere in the fall / winter.

A Spider-Man for a new (or old) era

In the series, Nicolas Cage plays the Ben Reilly version - a private investigator down on his luck who was once known as the detective / hero known only as The Spider. When all seems lost, he returns to that persona, coming out of retirement and reigniting his heroic ways. As the trailer showcases, this leads to some hands-on sequences throughout as the hero takes the fight to the criminals he crosses paths with.

The first season will also feature alternate versions of some Spider-Man favorites, with the trailer confirming that we will see noir versions of Black Cat, Silvermane, and Sandman. Robbie Robertson will also have a regular role on the show, with New Girl star Lamorne Morris playing him.

Speaking of Morris, he recently left the internet confused when he too responded to a question about a second season of Spider-Noir, telling Variety: "Uh, I’ll just — you know. You know what I mean."

Time will tell whether Spider-Noir will get that second season, but we won't have too long to wait before we know if season 1 sets the stage for another. The full eight-episode season arrives this May on Prime Video, where it will be available to stream in both black-and-white and color.

Spider-Noir arrives on Prime Video on May 27, 2026. The first episode will premiere two days earlier in the US (May 25) on MGM+ before the full season releases on Prime Video on May 27.
