When a comic book character is announced to appear in a movie or show, they usually have a big storyline within the source material too to go along with it. For example, this year, DC Comics announced the Summer of Superman ahead of the Man of Steel’s James Gunn-directed movie. And, a few months ahead of Creature Commandos' debut on HBO Max, DC released a Creature Commandos comic (written by David Dastmalchian with art from Jesus Hervas).

Marvel Comics does build-ups as well. Leading up to Avengers: Endgame, they published comics starring Thanos. It was a bold move considering the Mad Titan is a villain (and a deplorable one at that. Now, it's quite possible that we could be seeing a similar approach with season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again.

Daredevil: Born Again was a hit. Yes, the show had its flaws, but its popularity, depth, and excitement can’t be denied. Earlier this year, it was announced that Krysten Ritter would return as Jessica Jones in the second season, marking her official MCU debut. With both Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones appearing in Daredevil: Born Again in 2026, Marvel Comics smartly has its own projects lined up for them ahead of the season 2 premiere.

Daredevil

Daredevil’s previous Marvel Comics run was amazing. Writer Saladin Ahmed put our hero against something that would scare even the Man Without Fear: the Seven Deadly Sins. It was one of the few times Matt had fought something that he couldn’t punch his way out of, and it made him a more interesting character for it. After the series ended, it was clear that the next person to take over would have big shoes to fill. Thankfully, one of the best writers of the last five years, Stephanie Phillips, is next up.

"Lee Garbett brings so much style and emotion to every page, and I couldn't ask for a better partner to bring this version of Daredevil to life."
Stephanie Phillips

Stephanie Phillips has had a heck of a year writing Phoenix, Red Before Black, Grim (which is getting a Netflix show adaptation), Endeavour, and so much more. Taking on Matt Murdock (with artist Lee Garbett) as a law professor is something new and interesting that will change the way that people think about the classic Marvel hero.

Alias returns

The return of Jessica Jones’ original trailblazing series, Alias (Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos), is returning after debuting 25 years ago. This time, the creative team will be writer Sam Humphries (New Avengers) and artist Geraldo Borges (Dick Tracy), and it’s titled Alias: Red Band. Together, they’ll put Jessica Jones on a case that could affect her personal life and the political career of her husband, New York Mayor Luke Cage.

"I'm excited to push the limits of the kind of cases Jessica Jones can investigate, and how far she'll go to solve them."
Sam Humphries

Comic book fans haven’t seen a lot of Jessica Jones recently. Over the last few years, she’s appeared in Spider-Gwen: The Ghost Spider (by Stephanie Phillips), Variants (Gail Simone), and Sentry (Jason Loo). However, there hasn’t been anything in the past couple of years. This mini-series, along with her MCU appearance on Daredevil: Born Again, could remind comic book fans why Jessica Jones deserves to be a character with an ongoing series.
