Marvel fans are counting down the days until Avengers: Doomsday with more focus than the actual Doomsday clock that Marvel Studios uploaded onto YouTube earlier this year. It's going to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe event of the year - which is really saying something considering how Spider-Man: Brand New Day broke box office records and made a name for itself in a way that no MCU movie has in years - but that is just an indicator of the hype for the next installment in the world's most famous franchise.
As Avengers: Doomsday is set to bring together heroes and villains from not just the Multiverse Saga but the Infinity Saga and a host of classic Marvel movies that predate that MCU, it's going to be an epic one - one that may well see the largest-scale events in the history of cinema take place. It's a bold claim I know, but it's a sign of how Marvel never stops outdoing itself. And in order to pull that off, the movie is going to need a super long runtime. It turns out, however, that it's going to be even longer than that.
Avengers: Doomsday to be even longer than initially reported
The Multiverse Saga's conclusion is going to take its time when it arrives on our screens. Avengers: Doomsday was always going to be a long movie and recent reports have seemingly confirmed that, claiming that it will be around 2 hours and 45 minutes long. However, according to Marvel scooper James Mack, it turns out that the runtime may actually be much longer than, with one report even claiming that it will be about 3 hours and 30 minutes long.
If this were to be the case, it would easily make it the longest MCU movie of them all. Right now, that title belongs to 2019's Avengers: Endgame and its massive 3 hours and 1 minute length. That same film is about to surpass its own record, as Marvel Studios' upcoming re-release (Avengers Endgame: Encore) has four extra minutes of footage, which will take its runtime to 3 hours and 5 minutes. The question is: Can - and will Avengers: Doomsday surpass that?
It's possible. Don't get wrong, it's always possible with the MCU, but there is some really convincing reasoning as to why it might happen here. For starters, this is the movie that will kick off the end of the Multiverse Saga - meaning that it needs to start pulling the events of titles from Phases Four, Five, and Six together in order to wrap up some of those arcs. That means we will see the stars from countless MCU movies and Disney Plus shows, as well as the stars from Fox's X-Men movie series reprising their roles, too.
Let's not forget, it took Marvel Studios five hours to get through a livestream that announced the 26+ stars of the film. And, as we now know through Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell's subsequent casting reveals, those aren't the only stars of the movie. Yes, Avengers: Doomsday is a massive ensemble piece comprised of MCU veterans, the X-Men cast, as well as the stars of Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. So this is going to be a BIG movie, with a BIG cast.
Taking that into account, it's entirely possible that Avengers: Doomsday will make Marvel history with the longest runtime in the franchise's history thus far. If any movie was going to do it, it would be an Avengers one (heck, they have done that multiple times before already) and now that Earth's Mightiest Heroes will be tackling Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom across the multiverse itself, it's even more believable.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
