Back in March 2026, Marvel unveiled one part of the cast for Avengers: Doomsday—the studio's most ambitious project to date. However, the studio's president, Kevin Feige, confirmed that there are even more surprises in store that will be unveiled once the film hits theaters. Since parallel realities and alternate timelines will play a huge part in the upcoming crossover, the doors are open for any character to make an unexpected comeback at any time, regardless of whether they are still alive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or not.
Heroes from across dimensions are bound to jump back into action, and forgotten legends who haven't been seen in years can come back... except they may not be on the right side of history this time around. During San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Marvel gave us our first look at a Latverian Witch, a mysterious character who wears a green robe and a metal mask similar to Doctor Doom's. Day after day, the display changed, and the witch sported robes of different colors. This led fans to believe that maybe these were all different characters and that the ruler of Latveria would have a coven by his side.
Speculation ran rampant about who could be under the masks, with some of the most popular theories suggesting that the Scarlet Witch, Death, Doctor Strange, and the Ancient One would all return as Doom's followers after vanishing for a long period. Unfortunately, this may not be the case after all.
Death and the Ancient One won't be among Doom's Latverian Witches in Avengers: Doomsday, despite multiple theories suggesting otherwise
According to industry insider Alex Perez (via The Cosmic Circus), "The Ancient One and Death are definitely not the Latverian Witches." The source argues that the former is dead, meaning she won't return in any capacity, while the latter wouldn't willingly serve anyone. Unfortunately, this all but rules out their appearances in Avengers: Doomsday.
Perhaps the big question that this report raises is: Who are the Latverian Witches, then? Well, leaked concept pictures reveal that one of these mysterious characters will wear a metal mask that seems to have a third eye on the forehead. That means Doctor Strange is likely to aid Doctor Doom in his mission to "save the multiverse." After all, he is "pragmatic" enough to follow a dark path if it means avoiding the complete destruction of reality as a whole.
Interestingly, Sophia Di Martino, who portrays Sylvie in the Loki Disney+ series, liked a comment on one of her Instagram posts that asked whether she is a Latverian Witch. While far from being a confirmation, it could be a hint that Sylvie switched to Doom's side after killing He Who Remains on the small screen.
Clea and Captain Carter are among the most popular candidates as well, especially given how their characters are associated with the colors worn by some of the Latverian Witches. Additionally, Alex Perez also revealed that the Scarlet Witch will be one of Doom's followers, which could explain where she has been this whole time, somewhat mimicking the events of the Avengers: The Children's Crusade comic book series.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we'll see more of The Ancient One moving forward if she isn't a Latverian Witch. After all, chances are that Marvel would prioritize Doctor Strange's story with Clea instead. As for Death, she can always make a return, especially since she was a crucial part of an installment in the WandaVision trilogy, which is set to culminate with the release of VisionQuest. While the iconic character may not be back in Avengers: Doomsday, maybe she can make an unexpected cameo in Avengers: Secret Wars instead.
Only time will truly tell who is hiding under the Doctor Doom masks, and who will decide to side with the Ruler of Latveria. On the bright side, it isn't long now before the movie comes our way, and this mystery is finally solved once and for all.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
