The Marvel Cinematic Universe has single-handedly popularized the use of post-credits scenes in modern cinema to tease upcoming storylines. Now, audiences tend to be glued to their seats after a superhero movie ends to discover if there is one last surprise after everything has seemingly been said and done. Fortunately, all signs indicate that Avengers: Doomsday will keep the streak alive.

We're heading into the end of the Multiverse Saga, which means Marvel Studios won't hold back in the years to follow. Every project released between now and Avengers: Secret Wars won't only feature unexpected twists and turns, but will also set up the MCU's big finale. Years ago, the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War hinted at the appearance of a major hero who'd save the day in Endgame, and a similar scenario could happen yet again with the release of Avengers: Doomsday.

Avengers: Doomsday will reportedly have two post-credits scenes teasing the return of major heroes

According to industry insider James Mack, Avengers: Doomsday will have "two extremely serious post-credits scenes with no jokes whatsoever" that will set up the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. The first one will reportedly reveal that Loki lost his time-slipping powers, which allowed him to jump to any point in space-time. The second one will showcase Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in Battleworld. However, there's a reason why these scenes will be particularly shocking, and it is that all three of these characters will seemingly die in Avengers: Doomsday.

At this point, it is a bit of an open secret that the upcoming MCU film will open things up with a big fight between the wall-crawler and the X-Men. Multiple reports suggest there will be an incursion between the Earth where Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker lives and the world inhabited by mutants. As a result, characters like Wolverine, Deadpool, and Magneto will have no choice but to invade the foreign reality and destroy it before it clashes with theirs. However, in the midst of all the chaos, Wolverine won't be able to return to his homeworld, and he will be left behind to die right next to Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man.

In a similar fashion, it has been rumored that Avengers: Doomsday will feature a scene in which Thor and Steve Rogers arrive at the TVA eager to talk with Loki, only to find the reformed villain's corpse lying on the ground with his heart ripped from his chest. Doctor Doom will reportedly kill the God of Mischief off-screen, and this shocking crime scene will be how the Avengers figure out that the Ruler of Latveria isn't as nice as he pretended to be.

Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, and Tom Hiddleston's Loki are beloved to the point where their "deaths" would be absolutely devastating for fans and a clear warning sign that no one is really safe. However, they are important enough that Marvel is unlikely to really kill them in Avengers: Doomsday. After all, we all know these characters wouldn't go without a fight.

Avengers: Doomsday is already stacked, as we know heroes like the New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men are about to take the spotlight. As such, it makes sense for Marvel to "save the best for last" and hand over the torch to Peter Parker, Logan, and Loki in Avengers: Secret Wars. The studio knows fans have been eagerly awaiting Thor to reunite with his brother, and such a moment would be all the more rewarding if it happened in the last installment of the Multiverse Saga. Similarly, everyone has been eager to see Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man team up with Logan, but we'll have to see them fight first in Avengers: Doomsday.

Of course, it's always best to take every rumor with a grain of salt. However, multiple reports from different sources seem to fit with each other, so there's a chance that we'll actually get these two iconic post-credits scenes in the upcoming MCU crossover.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
