Victor von Doom is not to be trifled with. That's very much the heart of the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, which was unveiled at D23 (just one month after the first teaser trailer was released at San Diego Comic-Con). But if you have read the Marvel Comics, you already knew that.
Doctor Doom is one of the most frightful, powerful, and downright unstoppable villains that the heroes of the Marvel Universe have ever had to face. And now, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and even the X-Men are teaming up in a bid to stop him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he makes his presence felt in Avengers: Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU to play the new role and he's already ensuring that we can feel the shivers when he performs.
However, the new trailer also confirms one thing that fans already suspected about the film's promotional material.
New Avengers: Doomsday trailer is once again limited to the same footage
There are plenty of surprises to come from Avengers: Doomsday. That's what we've been told many times before and it's pretty spectacular that we can once again say that after two teaser trailers (and the four character-centric teasers), but the truth is that the upcoming Marvel Studios sensation has revealed very little about its actual plot - and even less about other scenes in the movie.
The secrecy is abundantly clear after the second trailer's D23 release, which recycles a lot of the same footage as the first. This one places the focus directly on Doctor Doom, spotlighting his relationship with Sue Storm and Reed Richards, as Sue tells us that he used to be their friend. We then get new glimpses of Magneto, Professor X, Gambit, Shang-Chi, Black Panther, and Thor - all looking frustrated and worried about the power that Doom possesses. We also see new glimpses of Steve Rogers with his son, Thor with Love, Magneto using his powers, and Doom himself on his throne - as well as Doom looking at a painting of his loved ones.
We then cut to battle footage in which Doom is in the same broken down city ruins that we saw him in during the first trailer. He's confronted by Reed Richards, who begs him to deny causing the destruction around him; he doesn't do that.
He's then confronted by Thor, who promises him that he will beg for Hell before the God of Thunder grants it - we then see the same footage in which Doom manages to block the Asgardian hero's axe, Stormbreaker, with just two fingers. The villain sends Thor flying in a new clip before raising Sentinels out of the ground and telling him that Hell answers to him, for he is Doom.
Avengers: Doomsday is holding back its biggest scenes (for better and for worse)
Both Avengers: Doomsday trailers rely heavily on the Avengers Tower setting and the battle setting, revealing almost nothing else about the movie. We know that Charles and Magneto will share some emotional moments at the X-Mansion, Cyclops will unleash his Optic Blasts, and Thor and Steve will have moments with their respective children (which may or may not involve a visit from Loki for the former Captain America), but aside from that, we know nothing else about the movie or any other scenes that it will involve.
Even the leaks that surfaced online ahead of San Diego Comic-Con relied on the Avengers vs. Sentinels battle that Doom seemingly initiates in the new trailer. Same location, same battle sequence. And this is just another indicator of how well Marvel has kept a lid on the Avengers: Doomsday plot. It also suggests that things are about to get a whole lot worse for the Avengers.
Yes, Marvel Studios' reliance on the same scenes in both Avengers: Doomsday trailers may well be a good way of ensuring that the movie remains unspoiled ahead of its arrival in movie theaters, but it also suggests that the-powers-that-be are holding back bigger, badder, and even better scenes for the movie itself. There is absolutely more to come - especially if the film's rumored 2 hours and 45 minutes runtime turns out to be true - meaning that the best is yet to come. And in the Avengers' case, that could very well mean that the worst is yet to come from Doctor Doom.
It sounds like we're complaining but, as audience members, it's quite the opposite. We can't wait to see what Marvel Studios has in store for Avengers: Doomsday because if they're holding back when it comes to the trailer by featuring the same footage, they very clearly have a bigger picture in mind. There's more to this movie than the Avengers Tower conversation and Doom confrontation - and the Avengers could end up finding that out the hard way.
