The hype is real. Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday is one of the most interesting movies of the year and has been so since 2026 started, but ever since those two trailers were unveiled this summer, anticipation has skyrocketed - and for good reason. The film is set to act as the beginning of a two-part culmination of the Multiverse Saga for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it's already starting the promo train strong.
There are conversations about whether this is the film that can "save" the MCU after the franchise experienced an unexpectedly rough patch throughout 2023 (consisting of two major underperforming movies and a critically-reviled, underperforming Disney Plus show), which caused long-term damage to other subsequent films. But the truth is that the MCU never needed saving, just adjusting. The new Avengers: Doomsday trailer is proof of that.
Avengers: Doomsday trailer proves Doctor Doom is a worthy Big Bad
The brand new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday highlights that Victor von Doom is a force to be reckoned with. This is something that Marvel Comics fans have known for years, but mainstream MCU fans needed more convincing - because the last-minute decision to replace Kang the Conqueror, reboot the idea for Avengers 5, and bring back Robert Downey Jr. to play the new villain was pretty out there. The question is: Could it work?

Titled "A Special Look", the clip was unveiled to worldwide audiences at Disney's D23 Entertainment Showcase (after initially being screened exclusively to audiences in attendance at San Diego Comic-Con the month prior) and it has very quickly changed the conversations surrounding Avengers: Doomsday. Because while it certainly is a special look at the film, it's a particularly special look at Doctor Doom himself, who is nothing short of terrifying in the clip.
While the villain did make something of a cameo in the first trailer, he is all over the second one, which dives into his backstory, his motivations, and even more of his actions - actions which are truly shocking. Yes, the new footage implies that he is at the center of the incursions taking place throughout the multiverse. Worse than that, it seems as if he is doing it deliberately - out of revenge for losing his wife and son.
Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm and Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards are also at the heart of the trailer, which suggests that the film will be exploring Doom's past friendship with the pair. Sue tells audiences (and the Avengers) how Victor used to be kind and decent, all while being the smartest man in the room. Reed asks his former friend if he is responsible for the destruction around them (which may or may not be the world of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man). The villain simply glares at him.
As the trailer concludes, we see the earlier footage of Doom stopping all the might of Thor and Stormbreaker with just two fingers. Then, in brand new footage, he raises an army of Sentinels from the ground as he tells everyone who will listen: He is Doom.
There was a lot of concern about Marvel Studios' decision to pivot their plans midway trough the Multiverse Saga. Although Kang the Conqueror had a rough start, there was hope that Marvel might shuffle on with the legendary Marvel Comics villain in attempt to right the wrongs they did to the character in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but it wasn't to be. Others felt that bringing in Robert Downey Jr. to play a brand new character felt like a copout, while Marvel Comics fans understandably felt that Victor von Doom deserved a Thanos-level build.
That last argument is hard to argue against, because Doom does command all the power and aura of the Mad Titan. However, you do see all of that in both Avengers: Doomsday trailers. You can sense the fear through Thor's worries and the Fantastic Four's shock at their former friend's actions, you can sense the gravity of the situation through the incursions that Doom is at the center of, and you can feel the gravitas of Downey Jr.'s performance with just a look at his stoic eyes.
Avengers: Doomsday is Marvel's chance to deliver on the promises they made to fans, and the second trailer has confirmed that they are already on their way to doing that.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
