Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a game-changer. Don't just take our word for it, just watch the brand new trailers for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. After months of anticipation, the long-awaited film successfully upped the ante with the first look footage that has finally unveiled the first looks at Doctor Doom, a war-torn universe that the Avengers and X-Men will do battle in, and the monstrous Sentinels that will attack them.
However, the most recent one has essentially proven that a long-running report about one of the film's major deaths could well come to pass in the massive Multiverse Saga movie. And, understandably so, MCU fans are feeling a certain kind of way about it.
Avengers: Doomsday's newest trailer showcases Tobey Maguire's destroyed universe
Marvel Studios unveiled a brand new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday at Disney's D23 Entertainment Showcase and it was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The goosegump-inducing clip featured a new special look at Doctor Doom, highlighting why all of the Avengers, the X-Men, and everyone else involved needs to be taking the threat that he poses to the multiverse very, very seriously.
It's the Fantastic Four relaying this message, with Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm in particularly tearfully informing the likes of Chris Evans' Steve Rogers, Simu Liu's Shang-Chi, Ian McKellen's Magneto, Channing Tatum's Gambit, Letitia Wright's Black Panther, Winston Duke's M'Baku, and more MCU heroes about his past. And, as unnerving as that is, it's not the most frightening moment featuring a Fantastic Four member in the trailer.
Before we go any further, watch the trailer below:
You catch that clip in which Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards is asking Victor von Doom if he is responsible for destroying the world around them. From what we could see in that trailer (unless it's an intentional misdirect), it appears that the world around them is none other than an alternate version of New York City. And, if reports are to be believed, it's the universe that belongs to Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man.
According to reports that surfaced ahead of the new trailer's release, Avengers: Doomsday will open with two recognizable worlds that aren't the MCU's main continuity. One of them will belong to the X-Men (an alternate version of the iterations that starred in the 20th Century Fox movie series for two decades) and the other will belong to Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man (and, yes, we're talking the official Tobey Maguire Spider-Man that starred in the three Sam Raimi movies and returned in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home).
As the report goes, an incursion will bring both of these worlds together, with the X-Men's world ultimately winning out (hence why so many of them are main characters in the film), seemingly resulting in the demise of the original Spider-Man's world. The webslinger will also reportedly do battle with some of the X-Men - most notably Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, with neither one of Jackman and Maguire's heroes currently listed as main characters in the film.
The destroyed city in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer would suggest that the reports are true. And, as harrowing as that would be, it would convincingly set up Doctor Doom and the destruction of the multiverse as threats to be taken seriously.
This would be a similar approach to what the Arrowverse's Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover did when it aired on The CW back in 2019 and 2020, having the wave of antimatter that threatened the multiverse wipe out universes that were familiar to DC fans but not necessarily Earth-Prime where most of the shows took place. In that particular event, some of the universes in danger were that of Earth-66 (which is where the Batman 1966 TV series was set), Earth-89 (Batman 1989), Earth-90 (The Flash 1990s TV series) and Earth-203 (2003's Birds of Prey series). It was an effective introduction to the threat that also brought back some familiar faces from previous DC stories and adaptations.
Doing the same with Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man would certainly get a reaction out of audiences. After all, the original movie Spidey went back to his universe after his official MCU debut in Spider-Man: No Way Home (which united his Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield's and Tom Holland's Spideys for the first time ever), so it would definitely inspire mixed emotions to see him again under these circumstances.
Whether the apparent demise of his universe sticks is another thing. Both Maguire and Jackman's Wolverine are expected to play bigger roles in Avengers: Secret Wars next year, so there is ever possibility that the super pair survive the ordeal in Doomsday's opening moments, help defeat Doom in the sequel's grand finale and restore their universes to the way that they were.
Let's hope that is the case, becaise if that really is the world of the original Peter Parker in the Avengers: Doosmday trailer, it's going to need a super-sized miracle like that to return from its apparent fate.
