Marvel Studios is pulling out all the stops to launch Avengers: Doomsday on a high. The highly-anticipated MCU movie looks to change the face of the very franchise is is set in, kicking off the beginning of the end for the Multiverse Saga through the introduction of Doctor Doom (played by returning Marvel veteran Robert Downey Jr.) and the apparent collapse of the multiverse that will come along with him.
The countdown is well underway, with the sands in the hour glass beginning to run out; yes, that's how close we are to the film's release. And with that, you can rest assured that longtime fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are chomping at the bit to get something new. All you have to do is look at the response to both recent trailers - and the mysteries they posed us with that fans have been trying to solve ever since.
However, the first of those trailers - and, to a lesser extent, the second - has given one of the film's longest standing theories. And fans are convinced that it confirms one of the MCU's biggest deaths.
Avengers: Doomsday trailer appears to confirm Thor death theory
Marvel Studios unveiled a game-changing teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday ahead of San Diego Comic-Con, which offered up the first definitive look at the movie, its plot, and the majority of the characters involved in it. We had the returning X-Men, the New Avengers, veteran characters like Sam Wilson a.k.a. Captain America, and the return of the original Cap Steve Rogers. Through it all, however, was Thor - who highlighted how great the threat that they are facing truly is. And that may have just confirmed that long-running fan theory about the God of Thunder's imminent death.
Before we dive into it, watch the trailer below:
From the looks of the trailer, Chris Hemsworth's Thor is indeed the main character of the movie. A recent report also confirms as much, adding that he will share the spotlight with Chris Evans' Steve Rogers and Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom. Considering that those three actors were among the leads of the first four Avengers movies, that makes sense. The difference here, however, is that only one of those three characters are rumored to meet their end in the upcoming movie.
For quite some time now, rumors have suggested that Thor might end up sacrificing himself to give the Avengers a fighting chance against Doctor Doom. A subsequent Instagram post from Hemsworth himself celebrating Thor's legacy in the MCU also read as something of a goodbye message, which had fans very worried that he might be bowing out. Although the actor set the record straight about the statement, the rumors regarding Thor's fate have persisted.
The God of Thunder was the focus of the second character-centric teaser trailer released for Avengers: Doomsday back in December and that brief clip is the first piece of "evidence" that really had fans worried that the rumors might be true, as it showed Thor begging Odin for the strength to defeat one more enemy so that he can return to his previous daughter Love. And, naturally, this put the thought in all of our minds that he may ultimately sacrifice himself to save her.

This first teaser trailer, however, has only added fuel to that fire. Thor is the one leading the charge against Doom, telling the Avengers that he frightens even him. And when he tries to put that fear, might, and heroism into action, he can't overpower the villain - who easily stops Stormbreaker with two fingers. The subsequent trailer confirms that Doom will also swat the axe away before sending Thor flying backwards with a blast.
If the strongest Avenger is getting defeated so easily in the movie, he may be due a moment of triumph. And that moment could, unfortunately, result in Thor's demise.
We're all hoping that our theories are wrong. Thor is the ultimate Avenger and the longest-standing member of the current Avengers team (a role which he now shares with Steve Rogers), so if Avengers: Doomsday is making big sacrifices like so many of those involved have confirmed that it will, he seems like the most obvious choice here. And, to quote the God of Thunder himself, if Doom can defeat Thor with ease, the Avengers are indeed going to need a miracle.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
