Avengers: Endgame first came out 7 years ago, when it exploded into theaters with the largest domestic box office of all-time ($357 million), only to recently be upstaged by fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The massive culmination of over twenty movies still remains the only movie to ever earn over $1 billion globally in its first weekend. Endgame ended its historic box office run as the No.1 movie in history.
There is a caveat to that accolade. While Avengers: Endgame totaled $2.797 billion, overtaking Avatar’s reign of $2.789 billion, the latter’s reissue into Chinese theaters helped Avatar reclaim the throne in 2021. It now sits at $2.92 billion; a seemingly untouchable figure that not even Spider-Man: Brand New Day managed to come near, even though it topped the domestic box office charts.
Now Avengers: Endgame has its own re-release and Marvel Studios even rebranded it to Avengers Endgame: Encore since they filmed additional footage that has been incorporated into the final moments of the film. That may entice Marvel fans back to theaters more than a typical return to cinemas, like standard anniversary screenings.
The excitement for Avengers Endgame: Encore, which is undoubtedly fueled by the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday, is so substantial that it again finds itself leading the weekend box office, claiming the No.1 spot for September 25 – September 27. It raked in $26 million domestically and $86 million globally. Endgame outperformed all contemporary movies playing in U.S. theaters, including several new releases, while also far outpacing even the more positive projections for its opening weekend performance.
Combining Endgame: Encore’s figures into Avengers: Endgame’s original total, its global box office now tallies up to $2.88 billion. Endgame further distances itself from third place Spider-Man: Brand New Day (which is just shy of $2.5 billion) and edges closer to the coveted peak where Avatar comfortably sits.
Endgame: Encore would still need to gross about another $40 million to reach Pandora, and although that may not seem like a lot for superhero blockbusters, the numbers for these types of releases tend to be heavily front-loaded. Re-releases do not historically have long box office runs, especially when theaters need to make space for fresh content.
On the other hand, if any franchise can overcome all of those obstacles, the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be consistently blowing past expectations. The combination of an emphatic fanbase that loves to rewatch their favorite movies on a big screen and exciting extras that tie Endgame: Encore directly to Avengers: Doomsday could push Avengers: Endgame toward box office history.
Needless to say, Marvel Studios still knows how to deliver at the box office.
