Chris Hemsworth has given an update on his future as Thor, and it is very good news. Hemsworth debuted as Thor in his first solo movie in 2010, becoming one of the original Avengers. Since then, the character has grown in popularity, becoming the first Marvel Cinematic Universe character to get four solo movies. He will reprise his role in Avengers: Doomsday and is expected to return for 2027 sequel Avengers: Secret Wars.

While many fans suspected those two movies would mark the end of Hemsworth's run, the actor has spoke to the SmartLess podcast and teased that there is more to come. While promoting his new film Crime 101, he was asked about his future in the MCU and revealed that he would play the God of Thunder a "couple more times", even suggesting that there would be yet another evolution for the character.

"I was talking to Kevin Feige about it, and he said it’s cool because the audience now expects dramatic turns with the character... And whatever we do next—we’ve got some ideas to do something pretty unique again and hopefully be [different]."

Indeed, Thor has proven to be one of the most versatile characters in the MCU, evolving from a rather stoic and serious warrior to the more comedic action hero of Taika Waititi's movies. Hemsworth revealed that he also further expanded the character in the upcoming Avengers movies, as the Avengers: Doomsday trailer reveals Thor's new life as a parent.

Where will Thor's evolution take him next?

While Thor: Ragnarok helped to boost the Thor solo franchise, the response to Thor: Love and Thunder suggests it is wise to head in a new direction with the character as it went too far off the wall. The audience has been willing to go along with the tonal shifts in the character thus far, so it makes sense for the MCU to take advantage of that.

Given that the new evolution for Thor is enticing enough to bring Chris Hemsworth back for a potential fifth and sixth movie, it is exciting to consider what direction could be taken from here. It seems as though his new role as a father will play a part. While it is possible he could suffer more loss, we've already seen a broken version of Thor, so it would be pointless to have him lose even more.

There are some key characters fans are still waiting to see him face, too. Hercules, played by Brett Goldstein, was teased at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, only for that post-credits scene to become yet another unresolved plot thread from the Multiverse Saga. Fans also want to see Beta Ray Bill make an appearance at some point, so it would feel like a missed opportunity not to feature him in some capacity.

Of course, Avengers: Doomsday could set the stage for what comes next. It seems likely that the movie will see Thor and Loki reuniting for the first time since the God of Thunder saw his brother killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Perhaps the brothers could get a buddy movie together where they go off on cosmic adventures together. Whatever path is taken, fans will be happy that they don't have to say goodbye to Thor just yet.
