Agatha All Along episode 5 recap and ending explained: [SPOILER]'s identity revealed
We have somehow found ourselves at the halfway point of Agatha All Along. Marvel Television's spooky new series premiered on Disney Plus in mid-September and it has been bewitching audiences around the world with its supernatural storyline and eclectic characters, who have very quickly become fan-favorites.
It's been a new approach for the Marvel Cinematic Universe for sure, but it's a new look that it wears well. Seeing Kathryn Hahn back as Agatha Harkness has been a delight, while Joe Locke and Aubrey Plaza have been appropriately mysterious new additions to the MCU, keeping audiences guessing about their true identities.
That mystery played into the fourth episode the most, as Rio Vidal resurfaced as the coven's new Green Witch and actually helped the gang defeat a fiery demon through song in their most recent trial. Teen's injury left Agatha concerned for the boy, wondering if he might actually be her son, Nicholas Scratch (though Rio assures her he is not). And that set the stage for the fifth episode nicely, as episode 5 is all about Agatha.
So, if you haven't seen the episode yet, be warned that SPOILERS await you as we dive into what happened, and what it actually means.
Agatha All Along takes a demonic turn in episode 5
If you watched the promotional material for Agatha All Along, you probably knew this episode was coming. Yes, episode 5 is the one in which the coven performs a seance, which ultimately leads to Agatha Harkness herself becoming possessed, doing the spider-walk as if she were in The Exorcist and particularly singling Teen out.
But before we get to that, the coven once again find themselves walking the Witches' Road in search of their next trial. The heaviness of the events of the previous episode linger in the air, as Agatha ponders over what Rio told her about Teen, while also thinking about her own potentially-reawakened feelings for the Green Witch herself. And then, the trial shows itself. Well, you know, after the gang found themselves chased by the Salem Seven, who had found their way into the Witches' Road through the gateway the witches left open after summoning Rio!
Upon entering the house, the coven changes clothes once again. This time, they are dressed much more casually (either for working out or a sleepover... or a mix of both?), where they then take part in a séance, using a ouji board. They communicate with the dead, and even though Agatha attempts to avoid the subject by pretending to be possessed by Mrs. Hart, eventually a spirit makes contact.
In the most chilling scene in the episode, the lights go out and Agatha disappears from sight. The coven scrambles to find their leader, but Lilia points out a strange, heavy breathing sound coming from the darkness. Something resembling dribble lands on Teen, forcing him to look up with dread. And there, on the ceiling is none other than Agatha, seemingly possessed. As everyone freaks out, she drops into the room and makes a beeline for the mysterious boy (who is wearing a makeshift Wiccan suit, by the way), growling into his face.
It turns out that Agatha was possessed by her own mother, who told the coven to leave her behind. Alice attempted to save her by using her own magic, but as a result Agatha began stealing her magic. Teen attempted to try to get her stop by speaking to Agatha's son, Nicholas Scratch, from beyond the grave but by then it's too late: Alice is dead.
Agatha does show some remorse, but the more she is pressed on it, the more she reverts to form; laughing in Teen's face and dropping quite the bombshell on him before she turns to walk off.
Agatha All Along episode 5 ending explained: Just like his mother
Well that was a doozy of an episode, wasn't it. What's spookier than a bunch of witches in a spooky road? A bunch of witches performing a séance that leads to one of them getting possessed, that's what!
The ending of the episode, however, was the most shocking moment of all, as Alice seemingly died after Agatha accidentally (?) took her powers. Teen responded with anger, and soon afterwards Agatha told him he was so much like his mother. Though Agatha went to walk off, she was grabbed by Lilia and Jen, both of whom's eyes had turned blue - the same color of blue that the light from Teen's hands glowed. Yes, Teen has magic and Teen was possessing both of them.
At Teen's behest, the two of them forced Agatha into the dirt at the side of the Witches' Road (the same dirt that Mrs. Hart was nearly consumed by). And, shockingly, she was completely consumed by it, crying out for Teen to stop. After he was done with them, he flung his arms in the air, sending Lilia and Jen into the dirt nearby, which then also consumed them. And upon doing so, a blue crown appeared on his foreheard. A crown exactly like that of the Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff.
This confirms months of fan theories that Joe Locke is indeed portraying none other than Billy Kaplan, a.k.a. Wiccan, the son of the Scarlet Witch. How he got magic, we don't know, but we do know that - much like Wanda's chaos magic - his blue powers are unmatched and unhinged. The question is: Can he remember who he is before Agatha, Lilia, and Jen all die on the side of the Witches' Road?
There has been a lot speculation that Wanda could return in this series, and while Elizabeth Olsen has said that she won't be appearing in it, that might not actually be true.
Whether she does show up or not, Agatha All Along is part of the MCU's "WandaVision Trilogy", with Vision Quest set to continue the story after this one (and feature another major comeback). It all seems to be building towards reuniting the Scarlet Witch with Vision and her children. How that will happen, we don't quite know yet as fans are eagerly awaiting her actual return to the MCU (after her apparent death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), but the fact of the matter is that Teen, a.k.a. Billy Kaplan, is set to be a force to be reckoned with in the MCU - just like his mother.
