Marvel Studios has produced a lot of innovative content since the arrival of the Disney Plus streaming service. From the straightforward classic sitcom approach in the early episodes of WandaVision to the more modernized dramedy in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, there was a lot of experimentation going on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe throughout the Multiverse Saga. And let's not forget the Werewolf by Night Halloween special and the move into animation, too.
But perhaps one of the most unique projects that Marvel offered up during those early days of Phase Four was Moon Knight. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated projects on the MCU horizon at the time, the series starred Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke in a mythical, magical adventure that had MCU fans hooked on a weekly basis. And they have spent the past three years asking Marvel to bring it back for a second season.
Although it sounds like that might not be happening, one the show's most beloved cast members will be reprising their roles in an upcoming project as the studio has now confirmed their involvement.
F. Murray Abraham brings Moon Knight's Khonshu to Marvel Zombies
Moon Knight star (and Hollywood legend) F. Murray Abraham is set to reprise his Moon Knight role as the voice of Khonshu in upcoming Marvel Animation series Marvel Zombies. Fans were hoping that he might be involved in the project as it was confirmed that an alternate version of the Egyptian Moon God would appear, but it was not clear if Abraham would reprise the role. A recent press release from the studio has confirmed that he will.
In Moon Knight, Khonshu is something of a rogue god as, upon being banished by the council, he decides to get more involved in the world, utilising avatars known as the Moon Knights to carry put his form of justice on the criminals of the world. These knights are also known as The Fist of Khonshu, and in the Disney Plus series, the mantle is currently held by Marc Spector, as well as his other personality Steven Grant.
Khonshu often blurs the lines of morality in his quest to take down evildoers, pushing his avatars to be overly violent and relentless in his pursuit of justice. He's also not very understanding and will do whatever it takes to get the job done - something that was abundantly clear after the season 1 finale's post-credits scene. It's going to be interesting to see if this alternate version of him is the same.

Marvel Zombies is part of the MCU's Multiverse Saga but it also has something of a standalone quality to it given its existence on another earth. Based on the Robert Kirkman comic book series of the same name, it takes place on an earth where Hank Pym accidentally brings a virus back from the Quantum Realm, turning the vast majority of the human race (along with The Avengers) into zombies. What's worse is that they maintain a lot of their faculties, meaning that the heroes can still use their super-human abilities to track down their prey.
The version of Moon Knight that appears in the animated series is known as Blade Knight. And yes, that's because it's Blade himself who has become the Fist of Khonshu in this universe, allowing the Daywalker to have further enhanced abilities. The character is modelled after Mahershala Ali's version of Blade who is set to appear in future MCU projects, but Ali is not voicing the character as Todd Williams brings him to life in the show.
Fans hope Khonshu's return could pave the way for the MCU's main Moon Knight to come back too
Abraham is expected to play Khonshu again in the future whenever Moon Knight makes his long-awaited live-action return to the MCU franchise. Although the Disney Plus series was a success story for the MCU, Marvel's Head of Animation, Streaming, and Television Brad Winderbaum has suggested that a second season won't happen as the studio has other plans for the character.

There have long-been rumors that Marvel is planning to make a Midnight Sons movie, which would feature some of the more supernatural characters within the MCU. Moon Knight and Khonshu would likely be presences there, alongside the likes of Werewolf by Night and Man-Thing. This could also serve as a launching pad for characters like Blade and Ghost Rider who fans have been hoping to see make their presence felt in the MCU in the near-future.
There have been reports that the supernatural folk will be getting some more focus in the MCU's next chapter after the Multiverse Saga concludes, so it goes without saying that there is hope for Moon Knight's future. Although Oscar Isaac has since voiced the character in an episode of Marvel's What if...?, fans want to know what's next for the MCU's primary version of the character.
As we await answers, hearing F. Murray Abraham's powerful, commanding voice as Khonshu in Marvel Zombies is going to be very welcome indeed.
Marvel Zombies arrives on Disney Plus on September 24, 2025.
