Marvel officially confirms it's replacing iconic MCU hero ahead of Avengers: Doomsday

Black Panther will return in Avengers: Doomsday but, before the movie has even come out, Marvel has confirmed that a change is on the horizon for the character in the near-future.

It is no secret that the Marvel Cinematic Universe was radically changed after the release of Avengers: Endgame. With the culmination of the Infinity Saga, iconic heroes like Iron Man, Steve Rogers, and Natasha Romanoff were suddenly out of the picture, and new faces rose to the occasion in an attempt to fill that void. The Infinity Stones were no more, and suddenly audiences were introduced to new concepts such as variants, incursions, and branched realities. Now, we're about to be faced with a similar scenario yet again.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that the MCU will undergo a "reset" after the release of Avengers: Secret Wars. We'll witness a singular timeline once again, and a new generation of heroes will save the day on the big and small screens. The perfect example is the X-Men, whose new cast was announced at D23. In a similar manner, we've slowly started to see iconic characters like Captain America and Black Widow pass their superhero mantles to close friends or family members.

There will be a big shakeup moving forward, and it is bound to affect even the protector of Wakanda.

David Jonsson will be the new Black Panther after the MCU's Multiverse Saga comes to an end

During San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler took over the Hall H stage to announce that Black Panther 3 is officially in the works and set to come our way in 2028, after the release of Avengers: Secret Wars. Furthermore, Coogler also took the opportunity to introduce audiences to the new heir to the throne, David Jonsson.

During the post-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, it was revealed that Nakia and the former king of Wakanda had a son: Prince T'Challa II. We haven't seen Toussaint in the MCU since, but he'll be back in Black Panther 3 to inherit his late father's mantle.

Of course, it's worth pointing out that Shuri currently holds the Black Panther mantle—a choice that didn't come easily. She reluctantly followed in her brother's footsteps in order to protect Wakanda from Namor and his kingdom of Talokan. Despite that, we'll see her in action once more thanks to the MCU's next ambitious crossover.

Shuri will still be Black Panther in Avengers: Doomsday

Avengers: Doomsday is set to feature many heroes from all across the multiverse, so audiences were bound to see at least one iteration of Black Panther on the big screen. Now, it has been confirmed that Shuri will take this spot. The smartest person in the world will jump into action once more, as revealed by the film's teasers and trailers. However, there's a chance that we'll see the passing of the Black Panther mantle even sooner than expected.

Leaked Marvel concept art revealed that a new iteration of the iconic hero will be introduced during the events of an upcoming Avengers movie (likely Doomsday). Back then, it was heavily theorized that this new character would be a multiversal version of the King of Wakanda. However, we now have to consider the possibility that we'll witness Prince T'Challa II's debut as the Black Panther in Earth's Mightiest Heroes' upcoming adventure... but there's one key problem with this idea.

Prince T'Challa II was around 6 years old in the post-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which takes place in 2025 in the MCU. The main events of Thunderbolts* take place in late 2027, and the post-credits scene jumps ahead 14 months to 2029, which is when Avengers: Doomsday will likely begin. This means that, by the time Doom arrives on Earth, Toussaint will be ten or eleven years old, which is still very young to don the Black Panther mantle. On the bright side, there's also another possibility.

We know there was a time jump between the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame to truly get a grasp of Thanos' invasion. So perhaps we'll be faced with a similar scenario yet again. If the time jump happens during the events of Doomsday, then Prince T'Challa could very well be old enough to have become the Black Panther. However, it's more likely that this concept art was meant for Avengers: Secret Wars (after a time jump), which would explain why we'll see a new version of Black Panther sooner than anticipated.

Regardless of whether Prince T'Challa II suits up during the next big Marvel crossovers, it's clear that he will steal the spotlight in 2028, and we can't wait to see how it all pans out.

Black Panther 3 will be released in 2028.
