Marvel "confirms" which MCU show won't return for another season

Fans are convinced that Marvel just confirmed that one MCU character will return in a project that isn't another season of their own show.

In this new era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, change is a constant. We've known that since the Multiverse Saga began, but it's only in recent years that it has come to forefront of the franchise. Sure, the film series evolved a great deal with the inclusion of Disney Plus shows and standalone specials, but ever since some of its projects began underperforming, a new - more extensive - overhaul has been taking place.

After reports that expensive shows like She-Hulk: Attorney At Law and Secret Invasion struggled, the studio had to find a different way to make Marvel Television feasible. And so expensive miniseries were scrapped for potentially long-running multi-season shows with smaller budgets. Look no further than Agatha All Along, which carried the lowest price tag of any MCU project and went on to become one of Disney Plus' most successful - and acclaimed - projects of 2024.

That said, we've all been wondering where this leaves some of the previous shows that had potential for more stories. With cancellation rumors aplenty, Marvel has recently opened up about one of those shows' leading characters, with fans now convinced that they have subtly confirmed a second season is no longer on the table.

New Ms. Marvel comments suggest a return for the hero, but no season 2

It's been almost three years since Ms. Marvel premiered on Disney Plus, when it made an impression by becoming the highest-scoring MCU series on Rotten Tomatoes. But, aside from the character's cinematic debut in 2023's The Marvels, there haven't been any significant updates on the show's future. Rumors have suggested that Marvel Studios was considering a second season last year, but that was never officially confirmed.

Now, however, the conversation has come up again due to Kamala Khan's father, Yusuf Khan (Mohan Kapur), recently appearing in Daredevil: Born Again. He even referred to his daughter, who was seemingly off recruiting the Young Avengers (which was alluded to in the post-credits scene of The Marvels). Naturally, this has sparked conversations as to when the character might return, and if the show will ever return for that rumored second season. TVLine recently asked Daredevil: Born Again executive producer Sana Amanat (who also co-created the Kamala Khan character) if she might return, and she replied:

"Oh God, I hopesoon!... She is beloved by all of us at Marvel, and we have been talking…. Hopefully there will be plans soon, but it is very, very TBD. Hopefully [The Marvels] will not be the last we see of her."

While this pretty much confirms that we haven't seen the last of Kamala Khan, fans have already started speculating that the fact that the character's place of return has yet to be determined effectively rules out of a second season of the show. After all, after Marvel Television's recent overhaul, the most likely place for any of its TV heroes to return would be in a sophomore season. Look no further than Daredevil: Born Again, which is currently airing its first season and already filming its second. Since Ms. Marvel has a three-year head-start on Daredevil, wouldn't it make sense to begin filming another season of it?

While the show hasn't had a second season confirmed, there was hope as recently as last year. Reports have surfaced claiming that the studio will revisit some of the shows from its miniseries era and potentially renew them for second seasons, with Hawkeye and Moon Knight being the most likely for automatic renewals. Marvel Studios Head of Television Brad Winderbaum recently confirmed that Hawkeye is a show that has potential for season 2.

While reports around that same time claimed that She-Hulk: Attorney At Law had been quietly cancelled, there were some insiders who revealed that a Ms. Marvel renewal was still being considered due to how well-received the show - and the title character - was.

There is no doubt that we haven't seen the last of Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, but as the years ago by, a second season of the Ms. Marvel TV series looks more and more unlikely. While that's unfortunate, there is the planned Young Avengers series, titled Champions, which is looking likely to happen in the near-future. Vellani is planned to star as one of the lead of it according to multiple insiders, so we'll certainly take that.

That doesn't, however, change the fact that Ms. Marvel has so much more potential for subsequent seasons.
