Marvel says the quiet part out loud with new Daredevil: Born Again season 2 trailer

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is almost upon us and its newest trailer is a reminder that Marvel has learned a major lesson from the first season.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is easily one of the most sought-after projects this year, and Marvel Studios is very aware of that. The Disney Plus revival was a big success for the Marvel Cinematic Universe last year, joining the likes of Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in showcasing that the franchise is bouncing back from some creative missteps in 2023 that lingered for years. It also captured the violence of the Netflix saga of shows that inspired it.

The second season is right around the corner and the promo train has quietly commenced with two new brief trailers giving audiences a glimpse of what they can expect from the Marvel TV show's upcoming return. With the most recent of them, it also reiterates what fans have known about it for a very long time — and that Marvel has taken the feedback on-board.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 trailers highlight that Marvel learned its lesson

If you watched those Daredevil: Born Again season 2 teasers with a smile on your face, you weren't alone. From the greater role that Karen Page appears to play to the return of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, there is a lot to look forward to from the upcoming episodes, and the newest teaser - a brilliant TV spot - is the perfect example of that.

You can watch it below:

While there are a lot of things that we can take away from that teaser, the biggest of them is the fact that the show feels more like the original Netflix series. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of elements in there that absolutely remind me of Born Again's first season, but from the eerie red and purple hues to the focus on Kingpin's boxing match, the show looks and feels like the series that inspired it - even more than it feels like its own first season. And this is perhaps an admission from Marvel that season 2 is going to be more in-line with what the fans wanted from that long-awaited Daredevil revival.

As great as season 1 was, there has been a lot of retroactive discussion about how it couldn't quite live up to the Netflix show. Some even thought that Marvel Studios had dropped the ball, because it wasn't a good sign that the official Marvel brand couldn't produce a show to the same quality as the Netflix shows (which were produced by a previous, separate, version of Marvel Television and were barely even considered canon back then). That's not to take away from the first season of Born Again, it just struggled out of the gate and had something of a mismatched tone for much of its run.

Of course, there is a good explanation for that. The show was originally conceived as a reboot of the Netflix show, bringing back Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio as different versions of Daredevil and the Kingpin, with the MCU deciding to separate itself from the previous shows (and recasting any other "returning" character). Somewhere along the line, this direction was scrapped (Thank God!) and Marvel decided to retool the series as a direct sequel to the Netflix show instead... but not before multiple episodes had been shot.

The decision was made to rework the series, shooting a new pilot episode, new scenes for the subsequent episodes and then multiple new episodes to tack onto the end of the season. Although it worked like a dream, there were some discrepancies between the original vision and the new, stronger vision. And that resulted in a season that only got excellent just as it set up season 2.

The good thing about it all was that it was essentially a backdoor pilot to a much, much better second season. After a year-long wait, the above trailer suggests that those theories, hopes, and dreams were correct: Season 2 is set to be what Daredevil: Born Again should have been right from the start.

This is something that Wilson Bethel, who played Bullseye in both the original series and Born Again, recently spoke about, revealing that the upcoming sophomore outing "will make the season 1 of Born Again feel like the setup, and this is the payoff." And that's a very good thing.

A renewed focus on the Netflix characters

The first season of Daredevil: Born Again will go down in history as a success, but that will never erase the issues that fans had with it, particularly how the supporting characters from Netflix's Daredevil, like Deborah Ann Woll's Karen Page and Elden Henson's Foggy Nelson, were cast aside for new supporting characters in Heather Glenn, Kirsten McDuffie, and Cherry. But the season 2 trailers make it clear that Karen will return as a main character, joining forces with Matt Murdock as they go undercover to take down the Kingpin. Meanwhile, Henson will reprise his role in what appears to be a Foggy flashback, and Krysten Ritter will return as Jessica Jones.

Kicking the new teaser off with Jessica's return is a work of genius, because it not only gives the fans what they want, it's an instant showcase of the fact that Ritter and Cox clearly still have that Jessica Jones / Daredevil chemistry that very much carried The Defenders.

The season 2 storyline will revolve around the Devil of Hell's Kitchen raising an army to battle Wilson Fisk after he has abused the power of the office as Mayor of New York City. While much of season 1 was spent setting the table for this, it's clear that the second will be more intense and action-packed, hopefully matching the pace of the Netflix series in the process.

Ritter won't be the only star of the Netflix franchise to return either, as Royce Johnson reprises his role as Detective Brett Mahoney, who had become an ally of Daredevil's throughout the Netflix show's three-season run. There are also rumors that Iron Fist star Finn Jones and Luke Cage headliner Mike Colter will return as their respective characters, perhaps allowing Born Again to stage a long-awaited Defenders reunion.

All in all, expectations were always high for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, but the newest trailer is the perfect representation of why. Marvel Studios has shown us all that it's committed to course-correcting after those missteps with season 1's direction and ensuring that the show fully lives up to its role as a Daredevil revival. We can't wait for the season 2 to premiere.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 arrives on Disney Plus on March 24, 2026.
