It's been a long wait for the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer. A strange sentiment considering that the clip was unveiled to audiences at CinemaCon, but since the studio opted against releasing it online, all fans could do was read the inevitable footage descriptions and breakdowns designed to give us all an inkling of what might actually have happened in it. Based on those alone, the new trailer is a must-see - which is why it's all the most frustrating for the fans who have not, in fact, seen it.
It sounded like the wait might have come to an end this week when the Russo Brothers promised fans a big Avengers: Doomsday-themed surprise during their appearance at SXSW London, but that turned into a major topic of debate as those who were hoping for the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie trailer's release were left feeling disappointed.
Avengers: Doomsday trailer hopes dashed at SXSW London
Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo made an appearance at SXSW London to tease the upcoming MCU and, prior to the event, they promised fans a big surprise at 2pm BST. Naturally, the internet very quickly assumed it involved something major for the film and began speculating that the new trailer was finally going to be released. Some of the typical Marvel scoopers predicted that a trailer would indeed surface.
All of those fans, however, were left disappointed when it was revealed that the surprise was actually for a Doctor Doom-inspired coffee shop in London. Yes, that means that all of those teases, the Latveria / Doctor Doom symbol, and social media posts were indeed for that. It makes sense, of course, as it makes a huge event like a panel with the Russos all the more special to the Marvel fans in the area but, just like we saw with CinemaCon, it left those who weren't in attendance feeling somewhat short-changed.
One fan took to Reddit to share their disappointment, saying: "Wait THAT really was the surprise?... At this point that's negative marketing." Another called for the Russos to be banned from the event in the future.

The only good thing about the disappointing trailer revelation is that it likely clears the path of potential release dates, narrowing it down to just one: San Diego Comic-Con. With that event being Marvel Studios' annual big night of reveals about the future of the MCU franchise, it always felt like the right place to go large on the film. The studio just decided to get a bit of a head start with occasional marketing in the run-up to event.
It's also worth noting that this will be Marvel's return to Hall H after skipping the event last year to focus on making Avengers: Doomsday. Considering that the 2024 iteration actually saw the Russo Brothers, Marvel Studios' Present Kevin Feige, and Robert Downey Jr. himself officially launch the film, this has been a two-year passion project for all involved. It would be pretty fitting if it used the third SDCC to officially unveil the first teaser trailer to wide audiences (releasing it only as well).
And thus, the wait for the Avengers: Doomsday trailer continues. Yes, we can probably official say that it's coming next month with SDCC on the horizon, but it's still disappointing for fans who have repeatedly gotten their hopes up only to have them dashed time and time again.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
