4 things we learned from the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer

Earth's Mightiest Heroes are nearly here, and these are four key details we learned from their upcoming adventure thanks to the Avengers: Doomsday trailer.

"I have fought with many warriors in my time. They were far stronger than any of us combined, and they died. They died facing enemies and threats that scared me far less than this one. Everything that we sacrificed will be for nothing if we do not stand together." Those were the chilling words that Thor said during the official Avengers: Doomsday trailer. Unfortunately, the footage was showcased exclusively to those in attendance at CinemaCon 2026 and hasn't made its way online yet. However, that doesn't mean we are in the dark about what was shown.

Multiple trailer descriptions and even hand-drawn recreations have since made their way online, giving us an idea of what to expect from the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover. Fights will ensue, reunions will take place, and new characters will make their debut. Expectations are at an all-time high, and fans are eager to see the trailer for themselves. But as we wait for that day to arrive, it's time to break down four key details we learned from the CinemaCon footage.

1. We'll see the Avengers fight the X-Men

It all started when Alan Cumming revealed that Nightcrawler will fight Mr. Fantastic in Avengers: Doomsday. Multiple theories started to surface since then, suggesting that we'd see Earth's Mightiest Heroes fight the X-Men, and now it is confirmed that this will be the case.

The trailer showcased a scene of Yelena Belova fighting against Mystique, who had shapeshifted into... well, Yelena Belova. Furthermore, Shang-Chi was seen battling against Gambit. These fights will reportedly take place because the two groups of heroes are going to face each other for the survival of their respective universes. After all, Earth's Mightiest Heroes live in the MCU, while the X-Men are from the parallel reality seen in the post-credits scene of The Marvels.

Fortunately, audiences are unlikely to see these characters fight for long. It has been reported that Monica Rambeau will be key in brokering peace between the Avengers and the X-Men. With that in mind, it isn't far-fetched to assume that they will all join forces for the final battle at the very least. So, all things considered, it seems we'll have the best of both worlds (quite literally), as we'll watch the Avengers and X-Men battle it out before teaming up.

2. The Avengers and New Avengers appear to be on good terms

The post-credits scene of Thunderbolts* suggested that there is a bit of tension between Sam Wilson's Avengers and Yelena Belova's New Avengers due to the similarities between their names. That alone was enough to convince fans that maybe the two groups would never join forces to fight Doctor Doom (at least not during Avengers: Doomsday).

This "divided" approach could've eventually resulted in the Ruler of Latveria reigning supreme over everything and setting the scene for Secret Wars. After all, Avengers: Infinity War followed a similar approach, where Earth's Mightiest Heroes fought on two different fronts and lost on both of them. However, it seems that history won't repeat itself.

The Avengers: Doomsday trailer featured a sequence where Bucky, Ant-Man, and Sam Wilson's Captain America finally meet the Fantastic Four. This is a key detail because it suggests collaboration between Bucky, who is an active member of the New Avengers, and Sam Wilson, who assembled a new iteration of the "real" Avengers. At the very least, they won't be on bad terms.

For the time being, it seems the superhero drama will be between the X-Men and the rest of the MCU heroes. However, that itself is sure to make for a big spectacle.

3. Steve Rogers is still worthy and will reunite with some of his original friends

One of the most iconic moments of Avengers: Endgame is when Steve Rogers proves himself to be worthy by wielding Mjolnir and straight-up beating Thanos. Since then, the iconic hero time-traveled to the past, retired, and had a kid. However, one thing remains constant: He's still worthy.

A shot in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer showcases Steve calling and wielding Stormbreaker. While that itself is more than enough to make fans smile, it also means that the original version of Cap and Thor will be reuniting on the big screen.

According to the trailer's description, Thor says, "It can't be" before coming face-to-face with Steve. That's right, their long-awaited reunion is finally happening, and Marvel knows it is a big moment since it was the last shot of the entire trailer. If only Bruce Banner and Clint Barton were to make an appearance, we could have a proper OG Avengers reunion. They could all react to discovering that the next big MCU threat shares the same face as their former colleague. Besides, Robert Downey Jr. could also technically join them, even if he's now portraying a relentless villain. And speaking of the devil...

4. Doctor Doom is more powerful than we originally thought

It isn't a secret that Thor is one of the most powerful MCU heroes ever. The God of Thunder nearly killed Thanos on his own during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, and finally got to do so in Avengers: Endgame. He even took the full force of a neutron star in order to forge Stormbreaker. Very few could match him in raw power, but it seems Doom will be one of them.

According to the trailer's description, Thor will swing Stormbreaker at Doom with all his force, only for the supervillain to stop the hit with just two fingers. Now we know that the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and New Avengers will need to team up to defeat just one guy.

This could be Marvel's way of instantly setting up Doom as a true force to be reckoned with. After all, a similar scenario happened in Avengers: Infinity War, where Thanos and Hulk fought in the opening minutes of the movie, and the Mad Titan mopped the floor with the Green Goliath. Since Victor hasn't appeared in any other MCU project (aside from a brief cameo in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps), Marvel needs a quick way to make audiences fear him. Fortunately, it seems this is it.

With a bit of luck, it won't be long before Marvel releases the Avengers: Doomsday trailer for everyone to see. San Diego Comic-Con is just around the corner and is the ideal event for such an occasion. But regardless of the case, it's clear that there are a lot of exciting moments to look forward to.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
