When you think about the most anticipated movies of 2026, you have to know that Avengers: Doomsday is at the top of that list. The same can be said about Avengers: Secret Wars when it comes to 2027's most eagerly-awaited outings. The Marvel Studios double act are set to be two of the biggest films of the decade as the Marvel Cinematic Universe bids farewell to the Multiverse Saga.

It sounds like that won't be the only element of the MCU that the studio will be bidding adieu to as the two Avengers movies will likely follow in the footsteps of their predecessors (Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame) in bringing about the end of an era for the franchise. That involved killing people off and retiring others.

As one Marvel star teased that a cliffhanger is inevitable for the first film, fans are no doubt in for another emotional rollercoaster. And now, a report from one of the most trusted insiders claims that two beloved Marvel heroes will bow out after the Multiverse Saga concludes.

The story of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men will reportedly end after Avengers: Secret Wars

According to well-established Marvel insider Alex Perez, the MCU could be about to revert to having just one Spider-Man. During his monthly Q&A with fans via The Cosmic Circus, Perez responded to a question about the futures of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men and whether we would their stories would be over after Avengers: Secret Wars or whether could still be future plans for them. The scooper answered by choosing the first option, saying that their stories would end after Avengers: Secret Wars.

That might not come as a surprise to some as the characters aren't a part of the MCU's primary continuity, it will undoubtedly leave the fans who wanted to see more of these characters feeling a little sad - especially if they were longing for each one of them to get one more solo movie.

Maguire portrayed Peter Parker and his web-slinging alter-ego in Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man trilogy while Garfield took over the role for the two Amazing Spider-Man movies in the 2010s. Both of them famously reprised their roles in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, bringing to life one of the most long-awaited moments in movie history as both of them crossed paths with Tom Holland's Spider-Man for the first time ever.

Although both characters' arcs were mostly wrapped up in the film, it's clear that there is still more story for them to tell. And after that movie went on to make $1.9 billion at the box office, you can rest assured that both Marvel Studios and Sony are eager to find a way to bring Maguire and Garfield back.

Although neither one was mentioned in the official Avengers: Doomsday casting announcement unveiled earlier this year, there has been a lot of speculation that they will be involved in either that film or its 2027 sequel. Given that they were two of the biggest surprises in the Multiverse Saga and that the two Avengers movies are set to act as a multiversal two-part conclusion to that saga, the chances to them being among the many cameos are actually pretty high.

Marvel fans have been hoping to see Maguire's Spider-Man share a scene with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. The two stars led two of the major Marvel franchises of the early 2000s (Spider-Man and X-Men) at a time when there weren't many superhero movies around, so seeing them cross paths here would certainly be a full-circle moment. Although Jackman hasn't been confirmed for the Doomsday line-up yet either, he is rumored to make an appearance in either it or Secret Wars. After all, he too was officially welcomed into the MCU in Deadpool and Wolverine so there is a pretty high chance that he might appear - especially considering his Deadpool co-star Ryan Reynolds in now rumored to appear in the film.

Furthermore, Jackman's X-Men co-stars have been confirmed for appearances in Avengers: Doomsday, with Marvel officially announcing that Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, and Alan Cumming are all set to reprise their roles. With that in mind, a return for Wolverine feels inevitable too.

With Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars set to bring back the X-Men stars for a send-off before the next chapter of the MCU begins, it isn't surprising that there could be plans in place to do the same with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men. While it might be disheartening to learn that the chances of a Sam Raimi-directed Spider-Man 4 or a Marc Webb-directed The Amazing Spider-Man 3 have gotten significantly lower, the silver lining in this report is that it suggests that we will see Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Men at least one more time. And as silver linings go, that's pretty darn amazing.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars arrives on December 17, 2027.
