Throughout the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, countless different heroes have entered the picture and saved the day in memorable ways. However, since the release of Avengers: Endgame, some of these iconic characters have started to take a step back in order to give the spotlight to newcomers. The two biggest examples are Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, who perished the last time Earth's Mightiest Heroes assembled on the big screen. Now, we're about to witness an inflection point once again with the impending conclusion of the ongoing Multiverse Saga.
Variants of the X-Men from the 20th Century Fox era will jump into action one last time in Avengers: Doomsday. After the dust settles, a new cast will take over these iconic roles and carry the torch forward. Similarly, we've seen heroes like Hawkeye and Ant-Man mentor their successors, Kate Bishop and Cassie Lang, across the big and small screens. Change is inevitable, and no character will be able to stay around forever. Unfortunately, that also includes Marvel's most popular hero.
Tom Holland reveals there's already a plan laid out for Spider-Man to pass on the baton
In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland was asked if he knows when it will be time to pass the Spider-Man baton to someone else (potentially Miles Morales), to which the actor revealed that such a storyline is already planned out:
"There's a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home. It's laid out. It's going to change, for sure. But I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it's really exciting. I know I get really excited when we have these meetings and chat about it. But that is the thing I want to do most in this character, for sure."
Reports indicate that the latest Spider-Man trilogy, which began with Brand New Day, is bound to be Peter's last. Of course, the hero will likely participate in other crossover films in the meantime, such as Avengers: Secret Wars and the rumored team-up with other street-level characters such as Daredevil and the Punisher. There's also the possibility that Marvel has a change of heart after the overwhelming success of Brand New Day and decides to expand Peter's story for a few more years. Despite that, Miles Morales is bound to make his debut either way.
Speaking on Radio 1 Live, Tom Holland stated that he already knows the answer to "when" we'll get to see Miles Morales, as opposed to whether we'll ever see him on the big screen. As a result, it isn't far-fetched to assume that the young hero will be the one to carry on the Spider-Man mantle in the MCU at some point.
In the comic-book world, Miles Morales lived in an alternate reality called the Ultimate Universe, where a variant version of Peter Parker died. After that, the teenager from Brooklyn was bitten by a genetically enhanced spider and then carried on the legacy of his predecessor. Eventually, his world collided with Earth-616 (the main Marvel universe) during the events of the Secret Wars comic book series. After the dust settled, Miles started anew by permanently moving to the "main" reality, where he could spend time with the version of Peter Parker we all know and love.
With the Avengers: Secret Wars live-action movie on the horizon, it would be the perfect opportunity for Miles to enter the picture. That way, both he and Tom Holland's Peter Parker could share the screen in at least two movies before the latter bids farewell.
Of course, Marvel plans often take years to materialize, with the studio revealing that there are plans for projects all the way to 2042. With this in mind, we could see Tom handing over the Spider-Man baton many years down the line, but not before saving the day in many more standalone movies. However, the wall-crawler isn't a character known for his big-screen longevity, and sooner or later we'll see another iteration of the hero take the spotlight. On the bright side, if Marvel is already planning out such a moment, chances are that Peter Parker will go out with a bang.
